Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response addresses the prompt partially by discussing both attitudes towards work and leisure, though the position is not always clearly sustained throughout the essay. Furthermore, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the minimum two hundred and fifty-word limit, leaving ideas limited and under-developed. For instance, the arguments regarding why people take jobs or hobbies seriously are repetitive and lack specific, well-reasoned supporting examples. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the essay meets the minimum word count and extend all main ideas with fully developed explanations and concrete evidence.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays some basic organization with paragraph divisions reflecting the introduction, body points, and conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, such as the constant reliance on 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', and referencing is sometimes unclear or awkward. For example, transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the relationship between ideas is not always smoothly maintained. To improve cohesion, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive links naturally, ensure logical progression from one paragraph to the next, and manage paragraphing more purposefully.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Instances such as 'wheather' for whether, 'havung' for having, 'priotize' for prioritize, and 'prefarable' for preferable detract from the quality of the writing. The range of vocabulary is restricted, relying heavily on basic, repetitive terms like 'important', 'serious', and 'life' without showing flexibility or control over less common lexical items. To progress, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and learn precise word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar demonstrates a limited range of structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. The student attempts some complex sentence forms, but these are often faulty or incomplete, such as in the opening sentence where the dependent clauses lack main verbs or proper subordination. There are also frequent issues with articles, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. For example, phrases like 'taking hobbies and leisure interests seriously than their jobs' contain structural inaccuracies. To achieve a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free sentences and gain better control over complex grammatical structures and punctuation.
