Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both attitudes toward work and hobbies, and it presents a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. However, some parts are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this band level. For instance, the advantages of being work-focused are discussed with clear points about discipline and time management, but the disadvantages, such as family neglect and health problems, remain somewhat under-developed and lack extended specific examples. Similarly, the points regarding hobby enthusiasts are kept rather brief, noting reduced stress and lower goal orientation without delving deeper into societal impacts or specific workplace consequences. Note that 8 words copied from the task prompt were not counted toward the overall length.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas across paragraphs. The introduction sets up the two opposing views, the body paragraphs address the pros and cons of each lifestyle respectively, and the conclusion delivers the final personal opinion. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. Transitions between sentences and clauses rely on basic connectors like "However", "due to this", and "as", and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the run-on structure in phrases like "everyday due to this they are able". Paragraphing is utilized, though internal cohesion mechanisms need more flexibility to guide the reader smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts related to careers, hobbies, and stress management. Attempts are made to use less common vocabulary, such as "productivity", "work life balance", and "goal orientied", but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling, word-choice, and word-form errors, including "foucused", "disadvantagees", "intersts", "busny", and "reletives". While these vocabulary and spelling errors do not completely impede communication, they cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect limitations in lexical precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting multi-clause sentences with structures like "While people who prioritize... live a much easier life..." However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, often resulting in run-on sentences with missing punctuation or incorrect conjunction usage, such as "everyday due to this they are able" and "over-orientied which reduced there chances". There are persistent errors in grammar, punctuation, articles, and capitalization (e.g., lower-case 'i', missing commas before dependent clauses), which occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, though the meaning remains generally decipherable.
