IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

One group of individuals treat their work as the most crucial part of their life and second group prioritize their interests and hobbies over their jobs. I am in support with the second group as i think that focusing only on the job drains ones energy and social life.

People that always keep their job as a top most priority often spend a lonely life. There are certain factors that impose such mindset including the financial pressure that people face. They know if they do not do their job religiously, there are chances that they will be replaced by someone better. Another contributing factor is the lack of self confidence and ability to adapt to change. One of such example is my brother who is always absent in every important occasion and this habbit has been costing him alot in terms of family relationships.

In contrast to this particular type there are people wo are always ambitious about their interests and hobbies. Such people always apear to be much more healthy and happy in their day to day life. The hobbies that give you a sense of satisfaction are extremely important for a sound mind. I would like to qoute my personal example here, i am a doctor and i do have extremely hectic routine. When i do not play basketball i feel so drained and tired as if something is burning me from inside. And whenever i take the job side by side with my hobbies i feel more satisfied.

When we compare these two groups we will always find the type B people as more energetic, funnny and healthy. A sound mind is always the one having all colours in it.

To conclude this, there are two different groups in terms of prioritizing their work. One type always keep it on top of their head and second just keep it going with other life activities. The second type distinctively have more social acceptance and happiness in life. Also a healthy mind is always the one which is equiped with all the colours of the life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both work-centric and hobby-centric attitudes, and clearly states a personal position in support of hobbies and leisure interests. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, the reasons why some people prioritize work—such as financial pressure and fear of replacement—are introduced but remain somewhat under-developed rather than deeply explored. Similarly, the discussion relies heavily on personal anecdotes, like mentioning your brother and your experience as a doctor, rather than fully extending more generalized arguments with broader evidence. To reach a higher level, the response would need to extend and support all main ideas with more fully elaborated explanations and balanced reasoning across both viewpoints.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. Paragraphing is used to separate different ideas, such as discussing the work-focused group in one paragraph and the hobby-focused group in another. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Transitions between sentences and paragraphs occasionally feel abrupt, and referencing can be imprecise, such as using vague phrases like 'second group' or 'type B people' without smooth connecting links. To progress further, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that logical relationships between paragraphs are managed with greater precision and flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts and attempting some less common vocabulary items such as 'religiously', 'hectic routine', and 'social acceptance'. However, there are noticeable lexical resource limitations and errors in word choice, collocation, and spelling that hold the score back. Examples include spelling errors like 'habbit', 'apear', 'qoute', and 'equiped', as well as awkward phrasing such as 'keep it on top of their head' instead of prioritizing work. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their range of less common lexical items, exercise greater precision in word choice and collocations, and eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ability to vary sentence structures. However, there are persistent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles throughout the text. Noticeable issues include pronoun and capitalization errors (e.g., lowercase 'i'), missing articles (e.g., 'second group prioritize', 'as i think', 'is always absent in every important occasion'), and awkward prepositions (e.g., 'in support with'). These errors do not generally impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher rating. Improving control over articles, capitalization, and minor grammatical patterns will lead to more error-free sentences.
