IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people these days have gotten really busy with work and have little to no interest in other things. While, the other people are more excited about their hobbies and leisure activities than they are for their jobs. In my opinion, both work and hobbies deserve equal attention since they are both part of our lives and we cannot live our life to the fullest with any of them missing. This essay will discuss both sides.

On one hand, work or a job is a mean of financial stability in a humans life. A person who works hard can have a comfortable and peaceful lifestyle. People who dedicate their entire time and efforts to their jobs may have more opportunities to higher salary or for a promotion, allowing them to support themselves and their families. For example, doctors and teachers who are always busy with their work may feel particularly motivated when they see positive results of their efforts.

On the other hand, people who dedicate more of their time into other activities like reading, baking, cooking, gardening etc will have a stress free and relaxed lifestyle. Since hobbies allow people to develop interests and relationships outside their office, it becomes exciting for individuals to look forward to it. If people only focus on their careers and not on their other interests they may have little time for themselves and their families which would potentially lead them to burnout and stress. For example, a person who takes time seriously will find time to do both work and other activities and have a peaceful life rather than the one who is always busy with work.

In conclusion, while some people may prioritize their work because of financial and personal benefits they provide, others place greater value on hobbies and leisure because these activities offer both relaxation and enjoyment.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both work-centric and hobby-centric attitudes, and clearly states an opinion in the introduction. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this level. For instance, the paragraph on work touches upon financial stability and promotions with a specific example of doctors and teachers, but the discussion on the negative impacts of overworking lacks deeper exploration. Similarly, the conclusion is somewhat brief and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented. The position is clear throughout, and the main ideas are relevant to the prompt, but providing more extended supporting evidence for the hobby perspective would elevate the content further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct viewpoint. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand', but referencing and conjunctions are occasionally mechanical or slightly awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'While, the other people' and the transition 'rather than the one who is always busy with work'. The progression between sentences within paragraphs generally makes sense, though tighter logical links would help achieve a smoother flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the main ideas regarding work and leisure. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'financial stability', 'burnout', and 'stress-free', demonstrating an acceptable range. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'gotten really busy' instead of 'become extremely busy', 'a mean of financial stability' instead of 'a means of financial stability', and 'opportunities to higher salary' instead of 'opportunities for a higher salary'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision and natural collocation to reach higher standards.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures such as 'If people only focus on their careers and not on their other interests they may have little time...' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('a humans life' instead of 'a human's life', 'to higher salary' instead of 'to a higher salary'), preposition choices ('dedicate their entire time and efforts to' instead of 'dedicate all their time and effort to'), and comma splices or missing commas around introductory phrases. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the basic grammatical structures remain mostly under control.
