IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some individuals think that working and getting a good job should be the first preference over enjoyment, while other prefer enjoying the life without thinking about the future. In my opinion, work-life balance is the best strategy.

People who believe that we should just focus on our work and to get a good job, are worried about their future. In other words, they think if someone focus only on work only he can ahieve his goals or get a good job. It is because organizations hire those who have high working stamina. So, to get that specific job and enter that company, they belive only on hardwork without in life and think it is the only way to be successful in the future.

On the other hand, those who do not take interest in work, believe that life is all about enjoying everything. It is because life is just one time gift and if we spend it on thinking and working for the future then we would be unable to enjoy the things such as nature, technology and games. Moreover, they also think, what if we work all the time and because of that we lose precious things. Therefore, work-life balance would be the best solution which will able everyone to work for the future along with enjoying the life.

In conclusion, those who are worried about the future, belive on hardwork o

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You present a relevant opinion—“work-life balance is the best strategy”—and discuss both attitudes, giving reasons such as career security and enjoying life’s pleasures. However, the response only partially fulfils the task: the discussion is brief, and the ideas are mostly asserted rather than explained or supported with specific examples. For instance, the claim that organisations hire people with “high working stamina” is not developed, and the second viewpoint would benefit from a concrete example of what people might lose by working constantly. The conclusion is cut off (“belive on hardwork o”), so it does not properly summarise your position. The response is also 17 words below the required minimum. Develop each viewpoint with clearer explanation and evidence, then complete the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two attitudes, and an attempted conclusion. Linking phrases such as “In other words,” “On the other hand,” and “Therefore” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear or repetitive. The first body paragraph repeats the idea of focusing on work and success without showing how each sentence advances the argument. The final paragraph ends abruptly, weakening the overall organisation. Some connections are also difficult to follow, particularly “Therefore, work-life balance would be the best solution,” which shifts from describing the second group’s view to your own position without a clear transition. Organise each body paragraph around one main point, explain it in sequence, and finish with a complete conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the main topic, including “future,” “successful,” “enjoying,” and “work-life balance.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “working stamina” and “precious things.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. For example, “first preference over enjoyment” and “life is just one time gift” do not express the intended ideas naturally; “belive” and “ahieve” also show spelling errors. Repetition of “work,” “future,” and “enjoy” further limits variety. Build a wider set of accurate phrases for employment, leisure, and personal priorities, and check spelling and collocations when editing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if we spend it on thinking and working for the future then we would be unable to enjoy” and a relative clause in “those who have high working stamina.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “other prefer” instead of a plural verb, “if someone focus” instead of a third-person form, and the awkward construction “we should just focus on our work and to get a good job.” The sentence beginning “It is because organizations hire…” also has an unclear connection to the preceding point. The conclusion is incomplete, leaving its sentence structure unfinished. Practise subject–verb agreement and parallel structures, and proofread each sentence for a complete, clear grammatical pattern.
