IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary societies, hobbies are most of the one imperative thing in our life. Some individuals consider work as the most vital thing in life and less interest in their favourite activities or free time acivities compare with their occupatations. This essay will not only discuss both of view point but my opinion will also be highlighted while concluding this.

One compelling argument in favour of prioritising work is that employment provides financial security and opportunities for career growth. People who devote more time and effort to their jobs may gain promotions, higher salaries and valuable professional experience. For example, employees who consistently work hard and improve their skills are more likely to receive better positions in their companies. Moreover, a successful career can give people a sense of achievement and independence. Therefore, work plays an important role in helping individuals build a stable and successful future.

On the other hand, hobbies and leisure activities are also essential because they allow people to relax and reduce work-related stress. Spending time on activities such as playing sports, reading books, travelling or spending time with friends and family can improve people's mental well-being. For instance, an employee who spends the weekend playing a favourite sport may return to work feeling refreshed and more motivated. In addition, leisure activities can help people develop new skills and maintain healthy relationships. Thus, hobbies can contribute significantly to a person's quality of life.

In conclusion, although work is essential for financial stability and career development, I believe that hobbies and leisure activities are equally important. People should maintain a healthy balance between their professional responsibilities and personal interests because this can lead to a happier and more fulfilling life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both attitudes and give a clear opinion: the essay explains the benefits of work, then the value of leisure, and concludes that both deserve importance. Relevant support includes career progression and the example of returning to work refreshed after playing sport. This meets the task well, but the discussion is not equally developed in depth: the work paragraph explains financial security and achievement, while the leisure paragraph lists several benefits without exploring one in detail. The opening also promises to discuss both views but does not establish your own position until the conclusion. To strengthen the response, state your view earlier and extend each main point with a more specific explanation or example, rather than relying on broad claims such as hobbies improving quality of life.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two attitudes, and a conclusion that returns to your position. The progression from work benefits to leisure benefits is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “On the other hand,” and “In addition” help signal relationships between ideas. This is a coherent arrangement, though some connections feel formulaic, and the introduction’s promise to highlight your opinion “while concluding” delays the position rather than guiding the reader from the start. Within the body paragraphs, ideas are mostly presented as a sequence of claims and examples; clearer links explaining how each example supports the main point would improve cohesion. State your position in the introduction and use referencing or varied transitions more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a suitable range of topic vocabulary, including “financial security,” “career growth,” “professional experience,” “mental well-being,” and “work-related stress.” These phrases communicate the main ideas clearly, and some choices are appropriately precise. However, inaccurate word forms, spelling, and collocations are noticeable, particularly in the opening: “acivities,” “occupatations,” and “less interest in their favourite activities” are not natural or correctly formed. “Most of the one imperative thing” is also unclear, and “both of view point” is an awkward expression. These slips limit the precision and naturalness of the vocabulary, even though the reader can generally understand your meaning. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations as complete phrases, especially when writing the introduction.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause (“employees who consistently work hard”) and a subordinate clause beginning “because.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, and the body paragraphs show reasonable control of sentence structure. Some errors remain, especially in the opening sentence group: “hobbies are most of the one imperative thing in our life” has faulty structure and number agreement, while “This essay will not only discuss both of view point but my opinion will also be highlighted” is not formed correctly. There are also inconsistent spaces before punctuation and some missing or incorrect articles and plural forms. These errors do not generally prevent understanding, but they make the introduction less controlled. Practise accurate parallel structures and review articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries.
