IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.
Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.
You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals believe that work is the most vital aspect in life while others value their hobbies and interests over career. While it all boils down to preferences, both views are both important.
On the one hand, work takes up most of an individual's time. This was the norm we are trained to chase. The career we choose, value and invest on paves the way for an ideal lifestyle. The more a person climbs the corporate ladder, the higher the opportunity to fill one's pocket and live a comfortable life. That is why, most people neglect their personal interest and hobbies and focus more on building and working on their career life.
On the other hand, other people prefer to prioritize what makes life worth living. To explicate, individuals invest more on exploring the world through travelling as they value making memories rather than solely working. These people would manage to save a part of their earnings for a trip that would keep their sanity and a way to escape the daily routine. Additionally, people with this kind of mindset knows the importance of living outside their career life.
Both attitudes provide a valid arguement, it is a case to case basis. As for my opinion, I totally respect the idea of building a career while still young and also heal one's self in between through investing on personal activities such as sports, travelling, gardening and others. The choice is subjective depending on the situation, limitations and capabilities of a person.
In conclusion, the general population does not need to follow the norm. People who values their career first, do so because they wanted a comfortable life; however, people who puts their interests on top prefers to enjoy their life to the fullest and both sides are of equal important.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response discusses both attitudes and gives a personal view: the first body paragraph links career focus with financial security, while the second presents travel and leisure as ways to make life enjoyable and escape routine. Your opinion—that people can build a career while also making time for personal activities—is clear. However, the discussion is not equally developed: the work-focused view receives more explanation about income and lifestyle, whereas the leisure-focused view relies mainly on travel and maintaining sanity. The conclusion also repeats the contrast rather than adding support. To strengthen the response, explain the benefits and possible drawbacks of each attitude and develop your balanced position with a specific example or clearer reasoning.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall arrangement, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two attitudes, a paragraph stating your view, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation for coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility associated with stronger cohesion. However, a few links feel mechanical, and some references are unclear: “This was the norm we are trained to chase” does not clearly identify what “this” refers to, while “Both attitudes provide a valid arguement, it is a case to case basis” joins two ideas without a clear connection. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions by showing how each point relates to the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “corporate ladder,” “comfortable life,” “daily routine,” and “subjective.” These expressions help communicate the contrast between career and leisure, and you attempt some less common phrasing. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or awkward, such as “invest on exploring,” “career life,” and “fill one’s pocket.” There are also spelling and form errors, including “arguement” and “equal important.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling and word forms; for example, use “invest in,” “career,” and “equally important.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional comparison (“The more a person climbs the corporate ladder, the higher the opportunity…”) and clauses introduced by “while” and “as.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “people with this kind of mindset knows” and “people who values,” and the final sentence shifts between plural subjects and singular verbs (“people who puts” and “prefers”). The sentence beginning “Both attitudes provide…” also joins two independent clauses with only a comma. Review agreement with plural subjects and use a full stop, semicolon, or conjunction to connect complete clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
