Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people consider their job as most significant thing in life and donot have much desire towards other things. On the other hand, some people are more lingered towards their hobbies and activities they adopt in their free time. I believe there should be a balance among both things in order to live a happy and succesful life.

Some people give priority to their work and give little time to other interests, because these people dream of being successful, so in future, they can live a comfortable life. They believe in hustling and working hard in order to achieve their dreams. Other reason could be that they are the breadwinner of their family, so in order to provide, they have to keep their work first. For instance, if I talk about my personal life, we are three siblings and my mother is a housewife, and my father is the only breadwinner of the house. He has to give more time to his work to provide for himself and the family.I personally think that even though working hard is a good attribute but a person should try to keep a balance because working too hard can lead to a burnout.

Some people are more lingered towards their hobbies because it can be a source of happiness and sense of peace and freedom. Alot of people donot like their jobs and they just keep them to earn a living. I think that there is nothing bad with taking more interest in how free time is spent, but people should also take jobs that they love doing, because its a matter of life time, and if you do work that you are interested in, it can be very similar to having a hobby. For instance I was always interested in arts and biology as a subject so, I decided to become a dentist because in dentistry you must have an artistic sense and you must know biology. Now I love doing my job because its what I would also love to do in my extra time.

In conclusion, some people prefer work over extracurricular activities because they want success in life, other people are more inclined towards how they spend their spare time, because they want to be happy in life, but I believe that a balance must be maintained between both because both success and happiness correlate with each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses both attitudes and gives a clear personal view: the introduction and conclusion support balancing work with leisure, while the body paragraphs explain why people may prioritise work or hobbies. The family breadwinner example and the dentistry example make the discussion relevant and personal. This meets the task well, but the development is uneven: the reasons for prioritising work are explained in more detail than the broader claim that hobbies bring “happiness and sense of peace and freedom.” The discussion would be stronger with further explanation of how leisure benefits people, or a more specific example of the consequences of neglecting it. The position is clear, though its implications could be explored more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two attitudes, and a conclusion that restates your balanced position. Ideas generally progress logically, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. However, some connections feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Some people” to begin paragraphs and sentences. The second body paragraph also moves quickly from the benefits of hobbies to dissatisfaction with jobs and then to choosing a career, so the relationship between these points could be made more explicit. Use clearer referencing and vary transitions to make the progression smoother and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss work, leisure, and personal priorities, including “breadwinner,” “comfortable life,” “source of happiness,” and “balance.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “burnout” and “correlate.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “more lingered towards” does not convey “more enthusiastic about,” and “activities they adopt” is an awkward way to describe hobbies. Spelling and informal forms such as “succesful,” “donot,” and “Alot” also reduce control. Aim for natural collocations and accurate spelling, and avoid repeating broad terms such as “things” when a more specific noun is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response includes both simple sentences and longer complex structures, for example, the sentence explaining that the father is the family’s only breadwinner and the conditional idea about choosing work one enjoys. Most meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. Articles and sentence construction need attention in phrases such as “as most significant thing” and “a sense of peace,” while “if you do work that you are interested in” is awkwardly formed. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, especially around full stops and commas, as in “life. They” and “house.He.” Review article use, sentence boundaries, and punctuation, then proofread longer sentences to ensure their clauses are connected accurately.
