IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Work preference of people has change in recent times. Many individuals argue work as the essential thing in their life and do not have any other interest. While, other people are more interested in their hobbies and leisure rather than work. I strongly believe hobbies and leisure are also as important as work.

Many individuals are focused in their work and have little to not interest in any other activities. Any other hobbies and leisure activities might not provide the satusfaction, that the individual might receive from their work. And these individuals might have spend many years gathering skills and knowledge to achieve the job they wanted. Being, a workaholic might lead to quicker promotions, stable career and financial stability. Thus, regarding work as an important thing in life might lead to fulfilling and stable life.

On the other hand, people are exicted about their hobbies and leisure rather than their job. It might be the result of a work which is repetitive and boring. Additionally, these jobs might not provide the opportunity to learn or explore but, hobbies provide them the chance to learn and gain new skills. Furthermore, hobbies leads individuals to create connection with other people who have same interest, which might be beneficial socially and mentally.

In conclusion, I strongly support that individuals should be exicted and interested in hobbies and leisure rather work. Although focusing on work might provide stable career, hobbies helps individuals to connect back to the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both attitudes and state a clear preference for hobbies and leisure, so the response addresses the main parts of the question. The work-focused view is supported with relevant points about skills, promotion and financial stability, while the leisure-focused view includes learning, social connection and wellbeing. However, these ideas are mostly asserted rather than explained with specific examples or evidence; for instance, the claim that hobbies help people “connect back to the society” could be illustrated or clarified. Your conclusion repeats your position but does not fully weigh the two attitudes. The response is also five words below the required minimum, and the limited development makes the discussion feel incomplete. Extend the reasoning with a concrete example and a fuller comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each attitude, and a conclusion. The progression from the work-focused view to the leisure-focused view is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help the reader navigate the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the flexibility expected at the next level. However, several links feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Additionally” and “Furthermore,” and some connections between claims need to be made more explicit. For example, the move from hobbies providing new skills to their social and mental benefits could be developed as a clearer chain of reasoning. Use varied referencing and connect each supporting point directly to the paragraph’s main idea.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “financial stability,” “repetitive,” “gain new skills,” and “socially and mentally.” There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “workaholic” and “fulfilling,” but some choices are inaccurate or awkward and spelling errors are noticeable. Examples include “exicted,” “satusfaction,” “focused in their work,” and “create connection.” These slips sometimes make the reader pause, although the intended meaning is generally recoverable. The range remains limited, with repeated use of “hobbies,” “work,” and “individuals.” Improve precision by checking spelling and learning natural collocations, such as “focused on their work” and “form connections,” then vary repeated terms where appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “while,” “which,” and “although,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. However, errors occur across verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. For example, “Work preference of people has change” needs a corrected noun phrase and verb form, while “hobbies leads individuals” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “these individuals might have spend,” the verb form is incorrect, and “Although focusing on work might provide stable career” is missing an article. Some punctuation also interrupts sentence flow, as in “Being, a workaholic.” Work on accurate basic sentence patterns first, then check agreement and verb forms in longer sentences.
