IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

THERE ARE 3 BASIC NEEDS FOR PEOPLE TO SURVIVE WHICH ARE, BREAD, CLOTHS AND HOUSE. TO FULFILL THESE REQUIREMENTS , ONE MUST WORK VERY HARD. THEREFORE, SOME PEOPLE REGARD WORK AS ONLY THING IN LIFE AND HAVE NO INTEREST IN ANYTHING ELSE. WHILE OTHER PEOPLE ARE MORE ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT THEIR HOBBIES AND LEISURE INTERESTS. IN MY OPINION, THERE SHOULD BE A BALANCE BETWEEN JOBS AND HOBBIES.

ON ONE HAND, WORK IS CONSIDERED AS THE MOST ESSENTIAL THING IN LIFE TO SURVIVE. IF THERE IS NO JOBS , NO WORK DONE, LIFE WILL TURN INTO A BARREN LAND WHICH HAS NO SIGNIFICANCE OF LIFE. NO WORK MEANS NO MONEY AND NO MONEY MEANS NO BASIC REQUIREMENTS LIKE FOOD, CLOTHS AND HOUSE. TO EARN WELL AND TO LIVE A LIFE OF A DECENT PERSON, PEOPLE MUST WORK VERY HARD AND ENTHUSIASTICALLY. THEREFORE, THEY CAN ENJOY LIVING MOST PEACEFUL AND MEANINGFUL LIFE. HOWEVER THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY SHOULD NOT ENJOY THEIR HOBBIES AND NOT TO MAKE TIME FOR THEMSELVES.

ON THE OTHER HAND, SOME PEOPLE REGARDS THEIR HOBBIES AND LEISURE INTERESTS MORE IMPORTANT. IT IS A POSITIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE WAY OF LIVING THE LIFE BUT IT IS NOT ESSENTIAL FOR THE SURVIVAL. PEOPLE SHOULD ALWAYS RESPECT THEIR HOBBIES AND WHAT MAKES THEM HAPPY. ANYTHING THAT MAKES THEIR SOUL HAPPY IS TO BE CONSIDERED AS IMPORTANT THING. HOWEVER, THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID WORKING AND DISRESPECT THEIR JOBS AS WELL. ATLAST WORK IS THE REASON THAT A PERSON CAN ENJOY THEIR HOBBIES AND HAVE LEISURE.

IN CONCLUSION , THE ART OF LIVING IS TO HAVE A GOOD WORK LIFE BALANCE. WORK IS NECESSITY AND HOBBIES ARE THE HAPPINESS. THEY BOTH SHOULD ALWAYS GO HAND IN HAND RATHER THAN COMPETING WITH EACH OTHER. ONE CAN ENJOY THEIR HOBBIES AND LEISURE INTERSTS WHILE WORKING HARD ON THEIR JOBS.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both attitudes and state a clear view: “there should be a balance between jobs and hobbies.” The two main body paragraphs discuss work as necessary for survival and hobbies as a source of happiness, so the response remains relevant and covers the task. However, the discussion is more fully developed on the practical need to work than on why some people prioritise leisure; that side is mainly asserted rather than explained. For example, “Anything that makes their soul happy” expresses a value but is not supported with a specific example or consequence. The conclusion restates your position effectively. To strengthen the response, explain the motivations behind each attitude and support them with concrete examples, while making the comparison between them more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs beginning “On one hand” and “On the other hand,” and a conclusion. This makes the two attitudes easy to follow, and the final statement that work and hobbies should “go hand in hand” brings the argument together. Cohesive devices are generally appropriate, but the repeated “However” transitions sometimes create a mechanical rhythm, and some links between claims are not fully clear. For instance, the move from work being essential to people enjoying a “peaceful and meaningful life” needs a more explicit explanation. The opening also repeats the basic-needs point in the first body paragraph. To progress, vary linking methods and use clearer cause-and-effect connections, while ensuring each paragraph develops its central idea without repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “survive,” “essential,” “leisure interests,” “meaningful,” and “work life balance.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and phrases such as “a balance between jobs and hobbies” are appropriate. However, the range is somewhat limited and several word-choice, spelling, or collocation problems reduce precision: “cloths” is used where “clothes” is intended, “barren land” is an awkward image for a life without work, and “the art of living” is broad rather than precise in this context. “Atlast” and “intersts” also contain spelling errors. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and avoid repeating “work,” “hobbies,” and “life” when a more specific expression would clarify your point.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple and more complex forms, including conditional structures such as “If there is no jobs…” and contrast clauses beginning “However.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “some people regards” should be “some people regard,” while “work as only thing in life” needs an article (“the only thing”). The opening sentence also has an awkward construction and punctuation: “There are 3 basic needs for people to survive which are…” A few sentences are long or joined in ways that make the relationships between ideas less controlled. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, and use a wider variety of accurately formed complex sentences.
