IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people regard work as the most important thing in life and have little interest in anything else. Other people are more enthusiastic about their hobbies and leisure interests than their jobs.

Discuss both these attitudes and give your own opinion.

You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In contemporary world ,higher inflation rates and rising costs of living have made people highly competetive .Some people are so abosrbed in their careers that work has become their first priority. At the same time, there are also those kind of individuals who do not take their lives seriously and just live in the moment.

Considering both perspectives ,I contend that there should be a balanced approach towards life.People should focus on their careers but not at the expense of losing their enthusiasm in life.

Individulas who regard work as the utmost important aspect of their lives cite various reasons to support their view.To begin with,no one can deny the value of money and to earn money one has to work hard .To achieve your desired goals you have to prioritise your work. When one has money and a successful career he can ultimately lead a prosperous life.

Additionally ,striving for goals is not always materialistic. It gives you a sense of motivation and purpose .In order to live a fulfilling life it is crucial to have an aim in life. These aims and milestones keep you going in life and make you worthy of living.

On the contrary ,some people think that the sole purpose of life is not working and you must enjoy your life. This approach is also valid to some extent.Folks who are too focused on work and career often miss various precious moments of life.People who are jubilent and enjoy their hobbies and interests are usually happier and content. They believe that this life should be lived to the fullest and every moment should be cherished.Such people do not make job the centre of their lives but take job as a part of life. For example ,in france people have the mindset to enjoy life and not to make work a whole life.French people do not like to work on weekends and even do not talk about work when they are on holidays.Whereas in America ,everyone is very much consumed by work and there is a little concept of leisure.

In conclusion, one should lead a life that has a purpose and work hard but it shuold not be the only goal of life.People deserve to enjoy and have interests that make them happy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both attitudes and state a clear view: “there should be a balanced approach towards life.” The discussion of career-focused people includes relevant points about financial security and purpose, while the leisure-focused view is supported by the contrast between France and America. This covers the task well, and the examples help make your position understandable. However, some claims are broad or only briefly explained—for instance, the assertion that people who prioritise work “lead a prosperous life” does not consider possible costs, and the national comparison is presented without much qualification. To strengthen the response further, develop each main idea with a more specific explanation or example and connect the evidence more directly to your balanced conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two attitudes, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “Additionally,” and “On the contrary” helps readers follow the discussion. The progression is generally logical, but some links feel mechanical, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from happiness to a broad comparison of France and America. The relationship between the example and the claim could be made more explicit. There are also places where referencing is imprecise, such as “Such people,” which could refer to several groups. Use transitions more selectively and build clearer links between each claim, its supporting example, and your overall argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including phrases such as “first priority,” “sense of motivation and purpose,” “fulfilling life,” and “precious moments.” These choices help communicate both sides of the discussion, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, several word-choice and spelling errors reduce precision, including “competetive,” “abosrbed,” “Individulas,” and “jubilent.” Some collocations are also unnatural: “the utmost important aspect” and “make you worthy of living” do not express your intended meaning naturally. Aim for accurate, idiomatic combinations and proofread spelling. More precise wording would also help avoid broad phrases such as “enjoy your life” and “a little concept of leisure.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “When one has money and a successful career…” and “People who are too focused on work…” Meaning is generally clear, and the response includes some accurate sentence patterns. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain, however. For example, “there are also those kind of individuals” has a number-agreement problem, and “there is a little concept of leisure” uses an awkward article and construction. Commas and spaces are often missing after introductory phrases, as in “In conclusion, one should…” There is also a run-on structure in the France–America comparison. Review agreement, articles, sentence boundaries, and punctuation, while continuing to practise varied complex structures.
