You should use your own ideas, knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

I agree that some people firmly believe work is the most important thing in their lives, but that's not the case for everyone. In reality, people are more enthusiastic and interested in their hobbies than their jobs. In my opinion, we should discuss both cases.

On the one hand, I believe that many people get too involved in their work life and only care about their work, as they'll work on festivals rather than enjoying time with family, or they'll be working on Sundays too. Furthermore, by doing all these, they don't have enough time that they could do something besides or do what their hobbies are. It proves the enthusiasm that the person has for his field.

Moreover, it proves that the person is more dedicated and more sincere about that work. They do it passionately in their youth, but regret it later. They might also think to an extent that they'll earn more money by considering their life is work.

On the other hand, some people think the opposite; they are happier and more interested when they are following their hobbies and leisure. This includes spending time with friends, travelling, photography or any art forms. They have limited their work life and reserved days for doing these activities for example, weekends are for meeting friends, on regular day one hour is fixed for gym or swimming.

In conclusion, I would say that work is not everything; you need to take time for your hobbies and leisure time. But at the same time you need to be fruitful to your work too as it is also an important part of our lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both attitudes and give a clear overall view: work matters, but it should not take the place of hobbies and leisure. The examples of working on festivals or Sundays, and setting aside weekends for friends or time for the gym, are relevant to the question. However, the discussion is uneven: the work-focused attitude receives several explanations, while the benefits of prioritising leisure are mostly listed rather than explained. The claim that people “regret it later” is also asserted without showing why or giving an example. To strengthen the response, explain the consequences of each attitude and support your opinion with a more specific reason or illustration, rather than mainly restating that both work and leisure matter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two attitudes, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the discussion. Within paragraphs, however, some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Furthermore, by doing all these” does not clearly connect the long working hours to the next point, and “It proves the enthusiasm” has an uncertain reference. The second body paragraph also moves quickly from examples to a general claim without developing the connection. Use clearer references and build each paragraph around a main point, followed by explanation and an example, to make progression more consistent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “dedicated,” “passionately,” “hobbies,” and “leisure.” There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “reserved days” and “limited their work life,” but these are not natural in context. Other choices, including “fruitful to your work,” “work life,” and “any art forms,” reduce precision or sound awkward. Repetition of “work,” “people,” and “hobbies” also limits the range. Aim for more accurate collocations and vary key terms—for instance, describe people as committed to their careers or as setting aside time for leisure. These improvements would make your meaning more precise while retaining the accessible vocabulary already used.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including clauses with “as” and “when,” and most of the message remains understandable. Some sentence structures and punctuation need more control. The opening sentence uses “but” to join two independent clauses without a comma, while “Furthermore, by doing all these, they don't have enough time that they could do something besides” is awkwardly constructed and difficult to follow. In “on regular day one hour is fixed,” the article and sentence structure are also problematic. The shift from “some people” to “his field” is inconsistent in reference. Practise forming clear complex sentences and check articles, clause connections, and pronoun consistency; this will help you express the ideas without disrupting the reader.
