Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Many individuals think that workers in occupations, such as those in medical or engineering fields, should exclusively practise their craft in the regions they learn their professions. Many others claim there must not be any limits on geography to where such professionals conduct their livelihoods. In this essay, I will evaluate both sides and come to my own opinion.
There are many reasons why some people have the former position. Firstly, they are worried about the "brain drain". This is a movement of highly educated workforce, such as lawyers and doctors, leaving their countries where they honed their skills and education to a more opportune places fitting their career goals. The biggest example of this phenomenon can be seen in India; thousands of locally trained, educated, and experienced labor immigrate into nations such as the United States of American for advancements in their jobs and lives.
Secondly, the people of the first opinion point out to the differing methods, environment, and studies various countries have that can restrict a professional's career change and hinder the relocation process. For example, in the field of law, an attorney in a certain state, such as England, must lean the laws of another nation, such as China, and retake the bar exam before being allowed to practice law again.
On the other hand, the advocates of the second statement draw attention to the individual's freedom and rights, including one's choice of place for employment. Many workers, especially those in areas with less opportunities such as India, want to venture out of their native land and migrate to a more developed country where climbing the ladder is accelerated. Furthermore, it is and should be any individuals' rights to have the chance to work towards a desired future. This could include immigration to a different region for the sake of their career.
Personally, while both sides raise good points, and I fully agree regarding the hardships a person can face in moving to another country for job opportunities, I prefer the second position as I believe in the natural rights of every human and their efforts to strive for better days.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of 'brain drain' and the practical barriers to international practice. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the discussion on legal barriers is a good example, but the argument regarding individual rights could be further extended with more specific reasoning. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with deeper analysis rather than just stating the premise.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the information is presented in a coherent manner that guides the reader through the argument without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You have used some good topic-specific collocations like 'brain drain', 'honed their skills', and 'climbing the ladder'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'conduct their livelihoods' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'United States of American' (a grammatical error in the proper noun). While you demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, incorporating more precise academic synonyms and avoiding minor collocation errors would elevate the score. The range is adequate to convey your meaning clearly throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are some recurring errors, such as 'point out to the differing methods' (should be 'point out the') and 'any individuals' rights' (should be 'any individual's right'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more conditional or passive constructions, would also be beneficial.
