Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

People argue on whether professionals within the area of health, or engineering should be restricted to move elsewhere for work. While, such movements and the privilege of decision making make them less pressured and allow them to learn more in different settings, I strongly believe that there should at least be some compulsory years of service within their place of training, especially to those who study receiving aids and benefits from the government.

On the one hand, professionals should be mandatorily placed in their place of training because of the services they receive during their study and placements which are funded by tax-payers money from that place. In many countries, pursuing the professions such as doctors and engineers, comes with a lot of benefits and services from the government starting from their higher education. Students are provided with scholarships, tuition waiver, placements within the government sectors and many more, and the funding comes from the national reserve and the allocated budgets. With these provisions, it is not wrong of people to expect such professionals to remain in their place of training. However, for people who are not covered by any benefits during their course of study, the option to stay or leave must exist.

On the another hand, putting restrictions to such people often limit their capabilities so the decision should be left to them. When provided with the freedom, such professionals can work without pressure and more wholeheartedly because they are not being forced to do something. With such experienced individuals leaving to work in different places, they can be more flourished in their fields by being exposed to various circumstances. This helps in making them robust, which is an essential trait allowing an individual to work efficiently even in the face of adversity. Providing them with the freedom of making decision does not necessarily means they will not return back to their original place, and when they return, they will be be equipped with a lot of essential skills such as better communicator, efficient handling of pressure and robustness. Therefore, people believe in leaving the decision making part solely to the professionals themselves.

To sum up, if governments of different countries are helping such people in their whole profesional journey starting from their education and also their training, I believe it is alright to place mandatory stay.and help in the whole professional journey

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly regarding the argument for mandatory service based on government funding. However, the development of the second viewpoint could be more nuanced; while you mention that freedom allows for 'flourishing,' the argument could be strengthened with more specific examples of how this benefits the home country upon the professional's return. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You use a variety of cohesive devices, such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the another hand,' and 'To sum up,' which help guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. However, there are minor issues with cohesion, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the final sentence of the conclusion ('mandatory stay.and help in the whole professional journey'), which disrupts the flow. Referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'tuition waiver,' 'national reserve,' and 'adversity.' There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'more flourished' (should be 'flourish more') and 'decision making part' (should be 'decision-making process'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, these occasional inaccuracies prevent the score from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and natural collocation required for a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'People argue on whether' (should be 'argue about/over'), 'pursuing the professions such as doctors' (should be 'professions such as medicine or engineering'), and 'does not necessarily means' (should be 'does not necessarily mean'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some errors, such as the stray period in the final paragraph. Despite these errors, the meaning is rarely impeded, and you show an ability to construct complex sentences.
