Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Doctors and engineers are highly respected professionals who make significant contribution to the society. Some individuals support that professionals such as doctors and engineers should work in their own nation where they got training, where as others believe that everyone has freedom to work globally. This essay will analyse the reasons behind my perspective along with the examples in the subsequent paragraphs.
On the one hand, doctors and engineers should work in their own country as they play a vital role in the social and economic development of a nation. The government of a country usually spend a large amount of resources on these skilled professionals. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect graduates to contribute to the nation's healthcare and technological system. This is essential in the developing nation, where there is always a limitation of qualified and skilled workers.
On the other hand, people should have right to live and work wherever they want. Professionals may choose to work internationally for better salaries, career growth, work culture benefits and access to advanced technologies. For instance, doctors get global exposure and return to work in their own country with a valuable experience and new knowledge to serve for their own nation citizens and natives. This enhances the nation's economy. Hence, getting exposure from the foreign countries benefits both individual and society in the long run.
In Conclusion, although professionals practicing in their own country reduces the shortage of skilled workers, getting exposure internationally foster the growth of the nation's economy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic contribution of professionals and the benefits of international exposure. However, the development is somewhat brief. While the arguments are logical, they could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis to reach a higher band. The position is clear throughout, but the conclusion could be more robust by explicitly restating the writer's opinion rather than just summarizing the two sides.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother in places. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the essay maintains a coherent structure throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses some good collocations like 'social and economic development', 'skilled professionals', and 'global exposure'. There are a few minor issues with word choice, such as 'serve for their own nation citizens' which is slightly awkward. To reach a higher band, the student should aim for more sophisticated, less common lexical items and ensure precise collocation. The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'Some individuals support that' (should be 'support the idea that'), 'government... usually spend' (subject-verb agreement error: 'spends'), and 'limitation of qualified' (should be 'shortage of'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally accurate. The student shows a good grasp of basic grammar, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed for a higher score.
