Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, there are different opinions about thus issue.

Some people think that professionals should work in the country where they completed their training, while other believe that they should be free to work in any country they choose. This essay will discuss both views before giving my own opinion.

On the one hand, several people believe that doctors and engineers should work in the country where they completed their education. This is because governments often spend a large amount of money on their training. Therefore, these professions should give something back to their country by serving local people. For instance, many countries have a shortage of doctors, so keeping trained professionals at home can improve healthcare and other public services.

On the other hand, many people think that professionals should free to choose where they want to work. Everyone has the right to make their own career decisions and look for the better opportunities. Working in other country may provide a higher salary, better working environment and valuable experience. For instance, a doctor who works abroad can gain new skills and knowledge and later return to help improve healthcare in their home country.

In conclusion, both views have benefits. However, I believe that professionals such as doctors and engineers should be free to work in any country because people should have the freedom to choose their career wisely that are best for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the main points are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped. For example, the argument regarding government investment is sound but could be expanded with more specific consequences or counter-arguments. Because the response is under-length, it fails to fully develop the ideas to the standard required for a higher band. To improve, ensure you provide more detailed explanations and perhaps a second example to reach the word count and demonstrate a more thorough exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat simple, and the transition between the body paragraphs and the conclusion could be smoother. The overall structure is coherent, but the limited length prevents a more sophisticated flow of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the task, with terms like 'professionals', 'shortage', and 'career decisions'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are minor errors in word choice, such as 'other believe' (should be 'others believe') and 'look for the better opportunities' (should be 'look for better opportunities'). To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary and collocations, such as 'state-funded education' or 'professional mobility', rather than relying on basic descriptive phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'thus issue' (should be 'this issue'), 'should free to choose' (missing 'be'), and 'in other country' (should be 'in another country'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more conditional or relative clauses, would also help elevate your score.
