Student answer (Band 7.0)

People argue skilled workers who require years of training before achieving their degree such as doctors and engineers should be confined to practice their degree in the country from where they trained from. However, others debate that these professional workers should have the right to work anywhere. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

On the one hand, confining one to stay in the country where they got their training from would be another way of giving back to the place which lifted the individual in being who they are today. Moreover, bringing this change would help the country to flourish as they would be producing skilled workers for their own betterment. Consequently, this transformation would bring in economic benefits as more skilled professionals are trained more people will recognize the country for their own training.

On the other hand, giving them the freedom to work anywhere means that they are getting the chance to make use of the hard work they earned in a better area for that profession. Additionally, many countries may have the right facilities to train certain individuals but might not have advantageous opportunities for them to work on the paygrade they desire. Captivating these doctors or engineers in a single country would eventually lead up to an abundance which will cause these professions to die off as people will seek for other career paths.

In conclusion, while giving back and helping the country you studied or trained from is a good gesture, having a choice to leave could enhance your way of living and would benefit you and the world significantly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the concept of 'giving back' to the country of training versus the individual's right to seek better opportunities. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the 'abundance' of professionals leading to the 'death' of a profession is slightly underdeveloped and lacks clarity. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explained with more specific examples or logical depth, rather than relying on general statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the place which lifted the individual in being who they are today', which is a bit awkward and impacts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'skilled workers', 'professional workers', and 'economic benefits'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'confining one to stay' (better: 'restricting individuals to staying') and 'lead up to an abundance' (better: 'lead to an oversupply'). The phrase 'lifted the individual in being who they are' is also non-idiomatic. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic phrasing to convey your ideas more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist throughout the text. For example, 'the country from where they trained from' contains a redundant preposition. There are also issues with verb forms and prepositions, such as 'seek for other career paths' (should be 'seek other career paths') and 'trained more people will recognize' (needs a conjunction or punctuation). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage will help.
