Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent times, the general public contend that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should serve in their own country where they completed their studies and professional training while the other citizens assert that they should be independent to immigrate to any country of their choice. I shall explain both views along with my opinion.

To begin with, certain fields such as healthcare and engineering are regarded honorable around the globe. When these experts contribute in their native country, it not only elevates the economic growth but also prepares the next generation of professionals. Ultimately, the population benefits from their expertise which is vital in today's era where every nation is facing a shortage of skilled workers. For instance, if Pakistani doctors don't migrate to developed countries such as America, Canada and Australia, the nation will have access to a prestige healthcare system.

Equally important, the opposing voices claim that engineers and doctors should pursue better life opportunities abroad instead of wasting their precious years in local cities. For instance, the developing countries such as Pakistan, Srilanka and Bangladesh are facing a major economic crisis and professional growth is not feasible under these circumstances. As a consequence, the citizens should take advantage of shortage in skilled jobs among european countries and relocate for a prosperous future. I completely agree to this approach because the more years the individuals spend in their native cities, the less chances they will acquire of permanent settlement abroad.

It can be concluded that, professional workforce should not consider serving in their own country at all. Instead, they must relocate to developed countries for both professional and personal growth. By doing so, they can not only upgrade the lifestyle of their families but also acquire new skills for upcoming future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the first body paragraph touches on the benefits of staying, the second paragraph focuses heavily on the economic struggles of specific countries, which slightly shifts the focus away from the broader professional debate. The conclusion is quite strong in stating your position, but the final sentence, 'acquire new skills for upcoming future,' is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting arguments are more balanced and directly linked to the core prompt of professional obligation versus individual freedom.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Equally important,' and 'As a consequence' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, the transition between the second body paragraph and the conclusion is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph flows more naturally into the next by using thematic transitions rather than just structural ones.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic, using terms like 'economic growth,' 'professional workforce,' and 'prosperous future.' There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'regarded honorable' (should be 'regarded as honorable') and 'prestige healthcare system' (should be 'prestigious'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated language, some word choices are slightly imprecise. Focusing on collocations and more natural phrasing will help you move into the higher bands. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the general public contend' (should be 'contends'), 'the less chances they will acquire' (should be 'the fewer chances they will have'), and 'professional workforce should not consider' (which contradicts your previous argument). Punctuation is generally correct, but there are occasional slips in article usage and subject-verb agreement. To improve, proofread your work specifically for these small grammatical inconsistencies, as they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
