Student answer (Band 6.5)

Recently, sharp discussions have risen regarding the placement of doctors and engineers and where they should work post-training. Some believe that they should be catering to patients within the country they trained in, whereas others believe that allowing them to work elsewhere will be greatly beneficial if they wish to do so. Personally, I feel more inclined to agree with the latter, as flexibility should be offered to such important and influencial professions.

Many people agree that doctors and engineers alike should be expected to work in the country that they trained in to honour the aid given to them over their trainee period. Training future engineers and doctors is no small feat, it is a long, extensive and intricate process in order to shape them into the best possible workers. Hence, they should return the favour by applying that knowledge within the country that aided them in their journey. However, I am against this ideology.

Doctors and engineers are of high demand everywhere around the world. In fact, I would argue that they are the most needed in places where no training is offered to begin with. Their primary job is to help everyone and anyone they can, through either extensive healthcare or technological aid, no matter where they trained. Such people are greatly needed in war sites and countries enduring great poverty and malnourishment. Therefore, they should be given the freedom to help out wherever they can. Personally, my aunt back in Sudan recently had an intense stroke and barely received adequate help due to the shortage of doctors. She and many others would have greatly benefited from the help of doctors who have the experience of studying and training abroad.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that doctors and engineers should not be limited to a fixed location, even if they had completed their training there, because the truth of the matter is that they are in greater demand elsewhere. Some may be more inclined to help out in their home countries where such support is absent, and they should be given the opportunity to do so.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the argument regarding global demand and the personal anecdote about the aunt in Sudan, which adds a layer of depth to the reasoning. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, ensure that the counter-argument is explored with slightly more nuance; while the 'honour the aid' point is valid, it could be expanded further to contrast more effectively with the global humanitarian perspective. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively with relevant and logical support.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Hence', 'However', and 'In fact' are used appropriately to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is sufficient and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. There is a minor issue with the transition between the second and third paragraphs, but it does not impede the flow of information. The use of referencing is generally clear, making the essay easy to follow for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and allows for clear expression of ideas. Phrases like 'no small feat', 'intricate process', and 'enduring great poverty' demonstrate a good command of language. There is a minor spelling error ('influencial' should be 'influential'), but this does not impede communication. The range is sufficient to discuss the topic with some precision. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common academic vocabulary to demonstrate a wider range, as the current selection is functional but occasionally leans towards more common phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and the punctuation is used effectively to manage the flow of the text. There are very few errors, such as the minor slip in 'war sites' (which might be better phrased as 'conflict zones'). The majority of the writing is error-free, and the control over complex structures is consistent. The essay demonstrates a solid grasp of grammar, and the occasional minor inaccuracies do not detract from the overall clarity or professional tone of the writing.
