Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is a controversy about the statement that whether the professionals such as the doctors and the engineers should serve their own people by staying in their homeland or they should avail the best opportunities among the world. I largely agree with the statement that every professional should prioritise their own country for the betterment of the public and to enhance the economic growth of the country by working in the national organizations. However, if they get a chance to broaden their experience and improve their financial status, they may choose the best offer from the other countries.

On the one hand, if the trained and the professional individuals start working in their own country, there will be a positive impact on the society, for example, the trained doctors will be able to improve the healthcare department and help the government to run the hospitals more appropriately. It will also decrease the cost of the treatment from the public hospitals and the better healthcare facilities will be available for the poor people. Similarly, the trained engineers when serve in their own country, they will invent new technologies which will increase the economic growth of the country but also leads towards a better global image of the country.

However, if the government may not be able to give them the opportunities for employment and better salaries, they can select to move for their personal growth and financial stability. Moreover, some developed countries may offer more appealing and attractable packages with multiple benefits to get promotions and bonuses thats why many graduates choose to leave their country for their better future.

In conclusion, I believe that the well educated individuals should try to stay and take part in their country's betterment by their knowledge and experience because they get education from their homeland so it is their turn to pay back through their skills and devotion. However, if they do not get better jobs and opportunities they should free to choose according to their desire.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the impact on healthcare and economic growth for the first view, and personal growth/financial stability for the second. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the discussion on engineers inventing new technologies is a good start but lacks specific detail or a concrete example to fully support the argument. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion could be more nuanced by explicitly linking the two perspectives rather than just stating they should be free to choose. Overall, it meets the requirements of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Similarly', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing, such as the use of 'the' before 'doctors' and 'engineers' in the opening sentence, which makes the flow feel slightly repetitive. Despite these minor issues, the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'healthcare department', 'economic growth', and 'financial stability'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'attractable packages' is not standard English; 'attractive packages' would be more appropriate. Similarly, 'the statement that whether' is grammatically awkward. While you attempt to use a range of vocabulary, the lack of precision in some areas prevents a higher score. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'the statement that whether the professionals such as the doctors and the engineers', where the use of 'the' is unnecessary and the structure is clunky. Another error is 'they should free to choose', which is missing the verb 'be'. Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some run-on sentences and minor errors in subject-verb agreement. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for small omissions would be beneficial.
