Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely recognized that the professionals like doctors and engineers should work after they finish their study is an important topic in modern society. Some people think they must work in the country where they studied, while others argue that they should be free to work anywhere. Personally, I believe with this statement, and I will discuss my supporting ideas further in this essay.

On the one hand, there are reasons why some people want graduates to stay in their home country. First, training a doctor or an engineer costs a lot of government money. Therefore, these professionals should stay to work and help their local people to repay this cost. Second, many poor counties do not have enough doctor and engineer, which decreased their economic growth. For example, doctors who lives in their country can improve healthcare in rural areas, while engineer can help to develop roads and public services. This benefits society and supports national development.

On the other hand, I believe professionals should be free to work in another country if they wish. Everyone has the right to choose the career and lifestyle that suits them best. Working abroad can provide better salaries, advanced technology, and experience different culture. For instance, a computer engineer who gains few experience in another country may later return home with new skills and mitigate their nation issues. As a result, freedom of choice also encourages talented people to improve their abilities.

To conclude, although professionals have a responsibility to support the country that educated them, I firmly believe they should not be forced to stay. Allowing them to work abroad respects personal freedom and can also bring long-term benefits through communication skills, knowledge, and experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic burden of training and the benefits of global mobility. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument regarding 'advanced technology' and 'mitigating nation issues' could be expanded with more specific detail to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, though the introduction is slightly vague, as the phrase 'I believe with this statement' does not clearly state which side the author supports until later in the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is imprecise, such as the transition between the economic argument and the example of rural healthcare. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for an academic task.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'economic growth', 'public services', and 'mitigate'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'many poor counties do not have enough doctor and engineer' (should be plural: 'doctors and engineers') and 'gains few experience' (should be 'gains some experience'). These errors do not impede communication but prevent the score from reaching the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and pluralization, such as 'professionals like doctors and engineers should work... is an important topic' and 'doctors who lives in their country'. Punctuation is generally correct, but the frequency of these minor grammatical slips keeps the score in the 6.0 range. To improve, the writer should focus on ensuring that subjects and verbs agree and that nouns are correctly pluralized in general statements.
