IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

While some argue that specialists, such us doctors and engineers, are obliged to work in the country where they received their professional training, others consider the freedom to work anywhere in the world is indispensable. Although it is crucial that professionals give back to the country where they had their practical grounding, I firmly believe that right to work anywhere in the world is non-negotiable as some countries cannot provide suitable positions and the necessary means of success.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0

The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, containing only 78 words. Because the task is not completed, the response fails to address the prompt's requirement to discuss both views and provide a supported opinion. The introduction sets up a potential argument, but the lack of body paragraphs means there is no development of ideas, no supporting evidence, and no exploration of the opposing view. Consequently, the response is incomplete and cannot be assessed as a full essay. To improve, you must expand your response to meet the word count by dedicating separate paragraphs to each viewpoint and providing concrete examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The response consists of only a single paragraph, which is insufficient to demonstrate logical paragraphing or the development of a coherent argument. While the sentences are grammatically linked using 'Although' and 'While', the lack of overall structure makes it impossible to assess the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are present but cannot function effectively in such a truncated text. To improve, you must structure your essay with a clear introduction, at least two body paragraphs exploring the different perspectives, and a conclusion, using transition signals to guide the reader through your arguments.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally appropriate for the topic, with phrases like 'practical grounding', 'indispensable', and 'non-negotiable' demonstrating a reasonable level of control. However, the limited length of the text restricts the range of vocabulary that can be displayed. There is a minor error in the first sentence where 'us' is used instead of 'as' ('such us doctors'). To achieve a higher band, you need to produce a longer text that allows for a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary and more sophisticated collocations used with greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The sentences produced are complex and generally accurate, showing a good grasp of sentence structure. The use of subordinate clauses ('While some argue...', 'Although it is crucial...') is grammatically sound. However, the extremely limited length means there is not enough evidence to judge your ability to maintain accuracy over a longer piece of writing or to demonstrate a wide range of complex structures. The error 'such us' is a minor slip. To improve, you should focus on writing a full-length essay to demonstrate consistent control over a variety of grammatical forms.
