IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is often argued by some individuals that students who have achieved their degrees in medicine and science and technology should have to provide their services in the country of origin, in which they have pursued their training and certification. While another group of people believe that it is not mandatory to stay in the same country. In this essay, I will discuss both views and give my opinion at the end.

To begin with, in my country, it is a right of students and parents to achieve their dreams in a field they are interested in. There are many students who have achieved degrees in their interested fields such as medical, mechanical, and electronic technologies. Apart from that, there are many programs and exams that give opportunities to work in government sectors. Most people think that professionals are required to stay in the country where they did their training and where they belong. There are many positive outcomes of this view, such as a doctor who has a specialized degree in heart-related illness can work with heart specialist hospitals and be useful for the citizens. In addition, engineers who have specialization in various fields like civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and more can help the nation by creating good infrastructure and good quality machines and vehicles. They can secure their future in their own country. For instance, a young student from Rajasthan has made a flying car that runs on solar power. The government has described that it is good development and that it is useful to provide emergency services in mountain ranges, where social facilities are not provided easily.

On the contrary, the other view is that professionals are free to move anywhere they want. There are numerous international opportunities for working professionals to achieve their dreams and work around the world. For example, Germany, a highest GDP worth country in Europe, has opened its doors for all international students to move there and achieve their dreams globally. They are providing programs in various fields such as medical, IT - Information Technology, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering.

To conclude, both aspects have numerous advantages, but I fully agree that students and professionals are free to work anywhere in the world they want.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The first body paragraph focuses heavily on the benefits of staying in the country, using a specific example of a student from Rajasthan, which is a good attempt at support. The second body paragraph, however, is quite brief and lacks depth regarding why professionals should be free to move, relying on a general mention of Germany. To reach a higher band, the arguments for the second view need to be expanded with more detailed reasoning or examples to match the depth of the first paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Apart from that', 'In addition', and 'On the contrary' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally repetitive. The conclusion is clear but could be more effectively linked to the main body points. Overall, the progression of ideas is coherent, and the paragraphing is appropriate for the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'specialized degree', 'infrastructure', and 'GDP'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'a highest GDP worth country' instead of 'a country with one of the highest GDPs'. The repetition of words like 'achieve their dreams' and 'fields' suggests a need for a wider range of synonyms to improve precision and variety.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'While another group of people believe that it is not mandatory' (a sentence fragment) and 'the country of origin, in which they have pursued their training' (slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor slips throughout. To improve, the student should focus on sentence variety and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy, particularly regarding relative clauses and subject-verb agreement.
