Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Till date there have been debates on the topic of professionals working in the country they graduated from and on the other hand others say that they should not be limited to the region that they were trained.

Suggesting that doctors and engineers should practice their skills in the countries that they were certified is due to the fact that each country has a different way of conducting things. For example, civil engineers might be taught on how to construct buildings based on the countries regulations but if they go to a country like Turkey that is prone to earthquakes they might not be able to deliver the expected structure of buildings successfully.Another barrier of working in a different country might be language, skill will not matter much when one cannot communicate the language very well.

In another view, working in a different country cannot cause harm because professionals like doctors, engineers are trained the same everywhere. In medical schools they teach students the same worldwide because diseases are not limited to a certain country. Moreover,if there is a little bit difference in their practices they are given the chance to further their education.

I believe everyone should be able to work they want aslong as they are trained .Being limited to work in one country can make people miss out on much better opportunities which is not fair.If someone is tested and found qualified for a certain skill that should not hinder where they should work.Concentrating of where someone was trained should not be a priority.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding civil engineering in Turkey is a good specific example, but the counter-argument about medical training is quite brief and could have been expanded with more depth. The conclusion is clear, but the overall essay lacks the depth of analysis required for a higher band. The ideas are relevant, but the explanation of why professionals should be free to work elsewhere could be more robustly supported to fully meet the requirements of a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'In another view' and 'Moreover' are used, but the transitions between sentences could be smoother to improve the flow. Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed, which affects the overall coherence. More varied linking words and better referencing would help the essay achieve a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'certified', 'prone to earthquakes', and 'deliver the expected structure'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'conducting things' instead of 'conducting professional practices'. To improve, the student should aim to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive or overly simple word choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Till date there have been debates' (should be 'To date'), 'taught on how to construct' (should be 'taught how to construct'), and 'Concentrating of where' (should be 'Concentrating on where'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after periods in several places. These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a wider variety of error-free complex structures.
