Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, professional occupations have come to play an important role in society. Some people argue that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they received their training, while others believe that they should be free to work in another country if they wish. I believe that these professionals should have the freedom to work abroad because their skills can benefit people in different countries.
To begin with, doctors and engineers play an important role in the development of a country. This is mainly because these professions require high qualifications and extensive training. During their education, professionals develop valuable knowledge and practical skills that can contribute to society. For example, doctors undergo several years of medical education and practical training before treating patients independently. Similarly, engineers can use their knowledge to design buildings, roads and other infrastructure. Therefore, it is important to provide these professionals with suitable career opportunities.
On the other hand, professionals should also be allowed to work in other countries if they wish. This can provide them with better career opportunities, higher salaries and valuable international experience. In addition, their skills can benefit communities in countries where there is a shortage of qualified professionals. For instance, doctors can provide medical services in developing countries where access to healthcare is limited. As a result, working abroad can benefit both professionals and the communities they serve.
In conclusion, although doctors and engineers receive extensive training in their home countries, I believe they should be free to work abroad. Their knowledge and skills can contribute to economic development and improve people's quality of life in different parts of the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task. You clearly present both sides of the argument and state your own position in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and logically supported, such as the mention of 'career opportunities' and 'international experience' for the individual, and the 'shortage of qualified professionals' in developing countries. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are more deeply explored; for instance, you could briefly touch upon the counter-argument regarding the 'brain drain' or the ethical obligation of professionals to serve the country that funded their education, which would add more depth to the discussion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use transition signals effectively, such as 'To begin with,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In addition.' The paragraphing is logical, moving from the importance of training to the benefits of international mobility. The referencing is clear throughout, and the flow between sentences is smooth. To improve further, you could incorporate a wider variety of cohesive devices to avoid relying on standard transition phrases, which would make the writing feel more sophisticated and less mechanical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'professional occupations,' 'extensive training,' and 'infrastructure' correctly. The language is generally precise and appropriate for an academic context. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the 'less common' or idiomatic items that characterize higher band scores. To improve, try to incorporate more nuanced collocations or academic synonyms. For example, instead of repeating 'important role,' you could use 'pivotal function' or 'integral part.' Overall, the lexical control is good, and there are no errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional and modal structures correctly, such as 'should be required to work' and 'if they wish.' The punctuation is accurate, and the sentences are generally error-free. While the grammar is reliable, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher band, try to integrate more varied sentence types, such as passive voice constructions or relative clauses, to demonstrate greater flexibility. The current level of accuracy is high, which is a significant strength.
