IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I think working in the same country where we had done our training can cause us a very good understanding with the local people and to communicate with the people around the locality. While working in the other cities or country can develop a social skill of communication and create a social impact to the people.

many people can contribute their best to improve themselves when they are working in some other countries, whereas this cannot be happened to the people who work in the same locality or country.

If the people work in the country they wish, it can make them feel comfortable and many can adjust themselves to the surroundings and work peacefully.

While forcefully working in the locality where the people are not willing to work can make them produce a bad and unsatisfied result of work.

According to my opinion, if we consider a person who aims to work in a company with high status, he or she can never do it from their own locality, this can only be possible if we work in other countries.

Finally, we can say that working in same locality where the persons had completed their is not much preferable because he or she may not get opportunities to prove their talent. While working in other country can provide them with wide range of opportunities to prove themselves to the world.

In conclusion, I would say that working abroad is far more better then working in the same locality where people completed their training.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments are repetitive and lack specific examples or depth. For instance, the claim that working abroad provides 'high status' is asserted but not explained or supported with logical reasoning. The response remains quite general throughout, failing to explore the complexities of the topic, such as the 'brain drain' phenomenon or the ethical obligations of professionals to their home countries. To improve, you should aim to expand on your points with concrete examples and more nuanced analysis to fully develop your position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is often disjointed. While there is an attempt to use linking words like 'While', 'According to my opinion', and 'In conclusion', the transitions between sentences are sometimes mechanical or confusing. For example, the second paragraph starts abruptly, and the connection between the idea of 'social skills' and 'social impact' is not clearly articulated. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive, and the paragraphing is not always effective in grouping related ideas. Improving the use of referencing and varied transition signals would help create a smoother, more logical progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for a higher band. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'working in the same locality' and 'working in other countries'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'cause us a very good understanding' (which should be 'foster' or 'develop') and 'far more better' (which is grammatically incorrect and redundant). To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'professional development', 'global mobility', or 'socio-economic contribution', and ensure collocations are used correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'this cannot be happened'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'completed their is not much preferable'). The use of articles and pluralisation is also inconsistent. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of grammatical slips prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading for basic errors and practice using more complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses, with greater accuracy.
