Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argues that trained professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be limited to work where they did their training. Others, however, believe that they should have freedom of choice and choose to work in any country they want. I believe that, skilled workers should have right to choose their work place although countries can give them special benefits to encourage them to stay.

On the one hand, there are several reasons to why they should be limited to work and should choose the country that have them training. The main reason is that, the government often spends significantly larger capital educating the top tier professionals like doctors and engineer. If the student decides to migrate to another country, then that nation could face loss on investment and shortage of skilled manpower in future. For example: if any developing country faces this problem then shortage of medical professionals can bring huge disaster their.

On the other hand, I believe that everyone should have freedom of choice and choose to work where ever they want without any restrictions. Specially when working abroad can provide better life opportunities, salaries, stability and better future. For instance, a doctor can choose to work abroad because he/she can find better facilities and opportunities for his career development. Therefore, limiting the personals from working abroad can limit their skills and professional developments.

In conclusion, no matter how right it seems to limit trained professionals to their own country where they trained because of efforts they have made, I believe that they should have right to pursue better career opportunities and improve their professional experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic loss for developing nations and the individual's right to career progression. However, the development is somewhat limited; for instance, the argument regarding government investment could be further extended with more specific examples or a deeper analysis of the 'brain drain' phenomenon. The response covers all parts of the prompt, but the depth of analysis is more characteristic of a Band 6.0 or 6.5 level as it remains slightly superficial in its exploration of the complexities involved.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'the country that have them training', which disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the central argument effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'skilled manpower', 'migrate', and 'career development'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'limit to work' instead of 'restricted to working', and 'personals' instead of 'professionals'. These errors do not impede communication, but they demonstrate a lack of precision. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on more natural collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('Some people argues') and incorrect preposition usage ('reasons to why'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma placement. While the student attempts complex structures, these are often where the errors occur. The errors are noticeable but rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended message, which aligns with the Band 6 descriptor.
