Student answer (Band 6.5)

In contemporary society, there has always been a considerable debate on whether doctors and engineers should provide services in their own country or they are free to move abroad. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe that their freedom is important.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why people believe they should work in their own country. First, they are important assets of a nation and a country spends its resources, while making them sufficiently capable. People believe that they should contribute for the well-being of the society. For example, many doctors and engineers from third world countries move abroad to get better opportunities, although their concerns are legitimate, they should pay attention for the development of their countries by providing services.

On the other hand, others contend that they should have enough freedom to go wherever they want. One significant reason for this is that they have worked hard and deserve to be in a better position. For instance, professionals from deprived areas, where they do not get perks as well as facilities, they should free to move abroad to pursue their career. Professionals from countries including India, Pakistan and Bangladesh should have liberty to work abroad because these professions are saturated in these countries. As a result, they are not facilitated with competitive salaries which they actually deserve.

In my opinion, although they should be grateful for their country that allocates their resources on them, people should be given the liberty of work at their dreamed place.

In conclusion, although there are valid arguments in favor of their services in their homeland, I believe giving them proper freedom is more beneficial because they not only deserve it but also can get better career opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the concept of 'national assets' versus 'individual career aspirations'. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding professionals from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh is a good start but could be further extended with more nuanced analysis of the 'brain drain' phenomenon. The position is consistent throughout the essay, but the conclusion is slightly brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more depth rather than moving quickly to the next idea.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'As a result', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the second and third sentences in the second paragraph is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used naturally would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There is some use of topic-specific vocabulary like 'contemporary society', 'legitimate', 'saturated', and 'liberty'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'allocates their resources on them' (should be 'invests resources in them') and 'they should free to move' (missing the verb 'be'). To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to express complex ideas with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'a country spends its resources, while making them sufficiently capable' is slightly awkward, and 'they should free to move' is a clear error. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are minor issues with sentence construction. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate more consistent control over complex structures and reduce the frequency of basic grammatical slips, ensuring that the majority of sentences are error-free.
