Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is commonly believed by the proponents that doctors and engineers must be required to work in the country where they did their training. In contrast, the opponents think that they should be allowed to in another nation if they wish. I agree with the opponents and will discuss a few reasons for this view.

On side of the coin, a small proportion of people believe there is a need for the skilled professionals like doctor and engineer to stay in the very country they learnt it. This is because if an individual studies and practices his selected course in a specific country, it would be only fair if he or she returns it back by serving the country by the skills. Moreover, one must not overlook this responsibility to provide to the only nation which gave them knowledge about the profession in the first place.

On the other side of the coin, there is a fraction of populace that tend to believe that these engineers and doctors should have freedom to work in a different country if they want as an individual, regardless of their background or nation, must be given the right to follow his own decisions and goals. Furthermore, only the specific person who learnt the skill must be the one who takes choice in the future what he/she wants to do in the future as well. As a result, they are the only ones who know which country is more beneficial for them.

In my opinion, a firmly agree with the belief of leaving it up-to the individual to be in charge of selecting which nation he/she wants to work. Firstly, it is their own right and choice. Secondly, some countries have a greater value to the field when compared to others. As a result, they get a higher pay in those countries which makes their training more appreciated and valued.

In conclusion, I strongly agree with the view that any individual from engineering or doctorate background must be given full freedom respective of their own choices towards selecting the country they aspire to work. Mainly because it is one's own choice whether they find the country in which they studied interesting or other countries in terms of pursuing their career and the more valuable one.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive and lacks depth. For instance, the argument regarding 'giving back to the country' is mentioned but not fully explored with concrete examples. Similarly, the point about higher pay is valid but could be supported by discussing the global nature of the job market or the benefits of international experience. The position is consistent throughout, but the supporting arguments could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other side of the coin', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'On the side of the coin'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive markers to avoid a formulaic structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'returns it back by serving the country by the skills' and 'respective of their own choices'. While the meaning is clear, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on basic terms like 'good', 'choice', and 'work'. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary related to professional mobility and economic development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'I a firmly agree' (missing verb/article), 'the proponents that doctors and engineers must be required' (awkward phrasing), and 'takes choice in the future what he/she wants to do'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the frequency of errors in basic sentence construction prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage is needed.
