Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's globalized world, skilled professionals such as engineers, scientists and doctors are vital for national development and breakthroughs and it is largely debated among some people that how they should work for the country which made them. Nevertheless, others counter that every individual must have freedom to work wherever they wish to. I strongly believe that such white-collar workers should contribute in national progress and participate in the works of home country.

On the one hand, a segment of the society feel that requiring professionals to work in home nation can bring significant benefits. The government can invest substantially in these fields in order to produce more skilled workers and build supporting infrastructure and environment to keep them in home country. Professionals play a key and constructive role in developing world through scientific advancements and medical researches. If they move to developed nations, it does not only cause shortage of white-collar workers but also slows down the pace of development. For instance, according to the United Nations (UN) report, lack of skilled employees can significantly push countries behind. Countries like Vietnam and South Africa are experiencing the same problem their professionals are migrating to different countries, as a result, these nations have faced shortages and lack of further advancements.

On the other hand, others come up with their argument that freedom of work is every human's fundamental right and it must be respected as well as admired. Skilled workers should have right to choose where they want to work and where not. Furthermore, they prefer to participate in other countries is, because developed nations often pay higher than their home nations and offer better living-standards. For example, nations like the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom provide enchanting annual packages and infrastructure to attract skilled workers.

In conclusion, after briefly and thoroughly analyzing both viewpoints, why they should pursue work in their mother countries and why they must have liberty to choose their work destinations. I strongly think professionals should contribute in the country which produce them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both viewpoints and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Vietnam and South Africa, and the reference to developed nations like Germany and the UK. However, the development of the argument regarding the 'home country' obligation could be more nuanced. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and lacks a strong summary of the main points discussed. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and sentence flow, such as the slightly awkward phrasing in the final paragraph: 'why they should pursue work... and why they must have liberty'. Despite these minor slips, the overall structure is coherent and cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with some good collocations like 'national development', 'scientific advancements', and 'white-collar workers'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'enchanting annual packages' (which should be 'attractive' or 'competitive') and 'participate in the works of home country'. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, the occasional inaccuracies in word choice prevent it from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'every individual must have freedom' (missing article 'the'), 'participate in other countries is, because' (incorrect sentence structure), and 'country which produce them' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The control of punctuation is generally good, but the frequency of minor grammatical slips keeps the score at a 6.0 level, as the majority of sentences are not error-free.
