IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The argument on whether skilled professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be obligated to remain in the nation where they studied or granted the liberty to work globally is relevant. While service for the local country that helped qualify is the good ethical and economical choice, forcing someone to practice locally violates their rights and freedom.

On one hand, the country that contributed to the services and education to provide skills to the professionals deserves to have the economic benefits of highly skilled professionals. If the students of developing countries, that have a low percentage of professionals, migrate to practice elsewhere, the country gets no benefit from investing. Tax payers of any country deserve to have more professionals and services in the country. Practicing locally also allows doctors and engineers to learn skills and have experiences that helps develop their own country.

On the other hand, going to another country benefits the individual, especially if their home country is not developed enough. Working abroad gives them new experiences and international skills that can benefit them in life. If said person is known to return to their home country later, the new and unknown skills can be used in their own country hence helping the development of the local country. Apart from the benefits of skills and experiences, moving to a different country also gives a chance to discover the world.

In my opinion, any individual should not be required to work in the country where they trained in forever. Instead, they should be required to provide their services locally for a specific amount of time, or pay back loans taken for training, after which they should be allowed to choose a new country freely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professionals should stay and that they should be free to move—and provides a clear personal position in the conclusion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed. For instance, the discussion on developing countries and taxpayers' investments in the second paragraph provides a logical justification for the first view. However, some arguments lack deep extension, and the supporting examples remain a bit general rather than drawn from specific real-world contexts. Nevertheless, the position is maintained clearly throughout, and the main tenets of Task Achievement for Band 6.5 to 7.0 are met, leaning towards a solid Band 6.5 performance due to slight under-development in places.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression. It opens with an introductory paragraph framing the debate, followed by two body paragraphs addressing opposing views, and concludes with a well-defined personal stance. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transition markers like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' structuring the arguments. However, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'said person' and 'the local country' used repeatedly, which makes the cohesion feel slightly mechanical in places. Overall, the logical organisation and progression meet the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0, supported by clear paragraphing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully using terms such as 'obligated', 'economic benefits', and 'international skills'. There are attempts to incorporate less common lexical items, although some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural or imprecise, such as 'service for the local country' instead of 'serving one's home country', or 'developed enough' instead of 'economically developed'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. The writer attempts complex structures effectively, such as conditional clauses ('If the students of developing countries... migrate...') and relative clauses. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'any individual should not be required to work... in forever' and 'experiences that helps develop' (agreement error). Punctuation is generally sound. While errors are noticeable, they rarely impede communication, allowing the response to achieve a Band 6.0.
