IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

People have different opinion about whether professionals such as doctors and enigneers should be mandated to work at the country they obtained their degree or these set of people should decide where they want to work. While both perspectives have some merits, ultimately I believe people should have a freedom to decide which country they would like to practice. This essay will discuss both sides and give my opinion.

On the one hand, the principal reason why people feel professionals should practice in the country where they studied is because they want them to give back to the society and high rate of umemployment. Firstly, Majority of proffesional courses in school usually use some resource from the community where they are receiving their trainings, so people feel entitled to them because they have freely use their resources. Although some fees were been paid by students, communities also render some assistance towards the success of their career. For instance, community people usually provide security for students in their vicinity, Secondly, most countries usually build their universities in developing areas and most of these towns doesn't have people with profession skills, so they often desire that students who finish in a university situated in their town should work in their area. Therefore, due to shortage of staff in various fields, citizens usually want graduated students to work in their community.

On the other hand, I completely agree that people with professional career and skills should be allow to decide the country they wish to work because they might want to upgrade their skills. This means some countries lack the necessary equipments and instruments needed in their fields, so they prefer to visit other countries. Furthermore, most of their countries usually pay low wages, so people want to travel to a country where their skills will be appreciated. For example, nurses in Nigeria prefer to leave their country because of poor working environment and they are poorly compensated.

In conclusion, although working in a country where someone received training have some benefits to the society, individual preference should be highly consider because most countries where people obtain their certificate might be lacking in equipments which can upgrade their skills and some countries might even be offering low salaries.

Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining clear logical flow, which aligns well with a Band 6.5 or 7.0 descriptor; given the clear progression, a solid Band 6.5 is appropriate.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'mandated', 'infrastructure-related concepts', and 'compensated'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'enigneers', 'umemployment', 'proffesional', 'trainings', 'town doesn't have', 'profession skills', 'allow', and 'equipments'. These errors do not seriously impede communication since the reader can easily grasp the intended meaning, but they prevent the score from reaching Band 7. The lexical range is sufficient and functional, fitting the criteria for Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and relative clauses, such as 'While both perspectives have some merits, ultimately I believe people should have a freedom...' and '...because they might want to upgrade their skills.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors involving subject-verb agreement and article use, such as 'People have different opinion', 'work at the country', 'most of these towns doesn't have', 'fees were been paid', and 'highly consider'. Despite these recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, they rarely impede communication, allowing the response to comfortably secure a Band 6.
