IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There are two views regarding professionals such as doctors and engineers, that they should work where they were trained while others have opinion opposite to this.

All the professionals, have to work really hard to achieve their professional goals. Once they have graduated, different people have different demands from their profession. Some wants to excel in their career, some wants to earn a hefty amount while there are people who just want to do 9-5 job, go home and rest. So it mainly, depends on what your goals and expectations are from your career.

In my opinion, the one who has made the effort of becoming a doctor or an engineer should be the one making this decsion. For exmple in USA and Austrailia, there are many very good paying jobs for the doctors as well as health system in some of the countries is far better than pakistan, so there is nothing wrong if one wishes to get paid well or wants to have excellent working environement. Similarly, in Arab Emirates there are a lot of golden opportunities for engineers in terms of wages as well as job stability.

Governement spends a good amount of money for the studies, so that is partly the reason that people think that the professionals should pay back to their country in the form of their services. There can be a mid way for this, people can get better training and learn from abroad and then can come back and serve their nation. A win-win situation.

If i talk about myslef, being a doctor, who studied in a governement university and paid very little yearly fees, felt the same burden of serving my own country. This stunted my career growth and poor pay resulted in dissatisfaction. Such a situation makes you question your decisions.

So, in conclusion, I would rather say that do whatever suits you beacuse at the end of the day you are answerable to yourself first.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views (whether professionals should work where trained versus freedom of movement) and providing a clear personal opinion. The writer's stance is evident throughout, particularly supported by personal experience as a doctor in a government-funded university system. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning specific regions like the USA, Australia, and the Arab Emirates to illustrate better pay and working environments. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise slightly in places, and some arguments could benefit from deeper academic elaboration. Nevertheless, the requirements for Task Achievement are well met, aligning solidly with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped into paragraphs, though paragraphing is sometimes basic, with several short single-sentence paragraphs that disrupt the flow (for example, the final concluding sentence). Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Once they have graduated', 'So it mainly', and 'Similarly', but referencing and linking can occasionally feel mechanical or abrupt. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points regarding personal freedom versus national obligation, but a more sophisticated transitional structure would be needed to reach higher bands. Overall, the essay maintains a coherent progression that meets the criteria for Band 6.5, rounding to 6.0 based on paragraphing and cohesion control.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'hefty amount', 'stability', and 'satisfaction'. However, there are several noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'decsion', 'exmple', 'Austrailia', 'environement', 'Governement', and 'myslef'. These errors show minor lapses in lexical control and accuracy. Despite these slips, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without severely impeding communication. Phrases like 'golden opportunities' and 'win-win situation' are handled reasonably well. This lexical performance fits comfortably into Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses. There is an attempt at variety, but punctuation and grammatical errors are frequent enough to detract from fluency. Examples of errors include subject-verb agreement issues ('Some wants', 'health system... is') and fragment or run-on structures ('There are two views regarding professionals such as doctors and engineers, that they should work where they were trained while others have opinion opposite to this'). While these errors rarely impede overall communication, they prevent the writer from achieving a higher band score where error-free sentences must constitute the majority. Control of grammar aligns with Band 6.
