Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that professionals should work in their own country from where they get their degrees and experience. While others believe that they should go abroad as there are more diverse growth opportunities for them. While this arguement is not entirely wrong, in my opinion, professionals, such as doctors, engineers and scientists should serve their home country instead of leaving it for other countries.

On one hand, people suggest that professionals should leave their country for economic and professional growth. This is the main reason behind brain drain. Highly qualified professionals leave their country if they do not find financial or career stability in their home country. For instance, every year in Pakistan many qualified professionals go abroad for the sake of having better employment opportunities. This not only damages the fragile economy of the nation but also causes scarcity of talented people.

On the other hand, numerous people believe that if professionals serve their country then it will lead to overall development and progress of a nation. For example, in Pakistan, if qualified and talented professionals serve the country instead of leaving it for abroad then the country will grow in all sectors such as economic, educational, social and healthacare.

In conclusion, professionals should serve their own country instead of going to other countries for better opportunities and stability. For this purpose, government should take positive measues to provide better employment opportnities and career growth options to young professionals so that talented people will prefer staying their own country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professionals should stay in their home country and that they should be free to work abroad—while also clearly stating the writer's personal opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, particularly regarding brain drain in Pakistan. However, the development of ideas remains somewhat general and could be extended further with more detailed explanations or contrasting viewpoints to reach higher band levels. Nevertheless, the prompt is fully answered, satisfying the core requirements of Task Achievement at a solid level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is coherent with an overall logical progression. The student uses standard paragraphing principles, dividing the response into a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a concluding paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the structure. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'In Pakistan' for examples. Overall, the organizational structure is easy to follow, making this a comfortable Band 6.5 performance in terms of coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, incorporating appropriate terms such as 'brain drain', 'fragile economy', and 'employment opportunities'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, alongside minor inaccuracies like 'healthacare' (typographical error) and phrasing like 'leaving it for abroad'. While word choice is generally clear and meaning is successfully conveyed, occasional awkward collocations and repetition of words like 'country', 'professionals', and 'serve' prevent the lexical score from reaching the higher bands. Spelling is mostly accurate aside from isolated typos.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses (e.g., 'if they do not find financial or career stability', 'so that talented people will prefer staying'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'arguement' (spelling), 'measues' (spelling), 'opportnities' (spelling), and 'prefer staying their own country' (missing preposition). However, these errors do not impede overall communication and the reader can easily follow the argument. Control over basic structures is sound, justifying a Band 6.0 for grammatical range and accuracy.
