Student answer (Band 6.0)
Society is divided into different viewpoints regarding the freedom of professionals. Although some people hold the viewpoint that professionals such as doctors and engineers should work in the country where they received their training because the country has invested money and resources in their education, I believe that the latter statement holds more importance.
On the one hand, the main reason why some people favour the former statement is because professionals should give something back to the country that trained them. This is due to the fact that governments often spend a considerable amount of public money on education and professional training. For instance, a survey conducted by a government education department has provided concrete evidence by highlighting that 40% of people believe that trained professionals should serve their own country for a certain period. As a result, this can help countries retain skilled workers and provide better services to their citizens.
On the other hand, I believe that the latter point of view supporters give the major reason of personal freedom and better career opportunities in its favour. As they believe that professionals should have the right to choose where they want to live and work. Another reason to be given by them is higher salaries and improved working conditions. They give this reason due to the fact that some countries may offer better career opportunities, advanced technology and higher wages.
To conclude, even though people support that professionals should work in the country where they received their training, I believe that professionals should be free to work in another country if they wish because of personal freedom and better career reasons.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professionals should work in their home country due to state investment, and that they should have the freedom to migrate for better opportunities. The student clearly states their own opinion in the introduction and maintains it through to the conclusion. Ideas are relevant, particularly regarding public investment and career incentives, though the arguments could have been slightly more extended with deeper examples rather than general statements like the survey reference. Nevertheless, the position is well-supported and meets the Band 7 requirements for task response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from introduction to the two contrasting views and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude'. However, there are minor cohesion issues and clunky transitions, such as starting a sentence with 'As they believe that...' which creates a fragment in the third paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately, ensuring the overall flow is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The writer uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating terms such as 'resources', 'investment', 'concrete evidence', and 'improved working conditions'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though occasional word choice and phrasing feel slightly repetitive or unnatural, such as 'the latter statement holds more importance' or 'the latter point of view supporters give the major reason'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication, placing this securely at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over multi-clause sentences such as 'Although some people hold the viewpoint that... I believe that...'. However, there are noticeable grammatical slips and structural flaws, such as sentence fragments ('As they believe that professionals should have the right...') and slight awkwardness in clause construction. Punctuation is generally sound, and while errors are present, they rarely impede communication, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
