IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In recent years, a huge number of professionals are migrating to other countries for jobs. Many people argue that specialists should serve in their home countries, while others feel that skilled individuals should have the freedom about where they want to work. From my perspective, everyone should have the right to choose the destination where they desire to pursue their careers. In this essay, I will discuss both views and state reasons in favor of my argument.

Proponents of one belief suggests that highly educated people should stay and work in the same country from where they have received the training. It is mainly attributed to the fact that skilled and well educated individuals are substantial for the economic growth and development of a particular location because they contribute by serving the community and paying taxes to the Government, and losing them will have a detrimental effect. For instance, if physicians begin to move abroad, this will result in lesser number of specialists in their own country, and ultimately the residents will suffer.

Conversely, other people state that workers should not be bound to stay in one place specially when they have better career opportunities on the other side. It is particularly important because a vast majority allocates the crucial time of their lives to become professionals, and they work really hard for an improved future. If they experience fewer employment options in their countries, and they know the possibility to get hired in a foreign country is relatively higher, they should take that chance for professional development.

Although some people believe that working in ones home country is a must, others suggests that engineers, doctors, and other skilled individuals can emigrate if they find improved choices. In my opinion, relocating for enhanced employment options is a personal preference, and nobody should be stopped from doing that.

Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Proponents of one belief', 'Conversely', and 'Although'. However, paragraphing and transitional phrases occasionally feel somewhat formulaic, and referencing could be slightly tighter in places (e.g., 'on the other side'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately overall, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items such as 'detrimental effect', 'proponents', and 'professional development'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'freedom about where they want to work' instead of 'freedom regarding where', and 'allocates the crucial time' instead of 'spends crucial time'. Additionally, there is a minor spelling or typographical slip ('ones home country' instead of 'one's home country'). Overall, the vocabulary is adequate to convey meaning clearly, earning a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as conditional clauses ('if physicians begin to move abroad, this will result in...') and concessive clauses ('Although some people believe...'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'Proponents of one belief suggests' (subject-verb agreement error with 'suggests') and 'in one place specially when' (spelling of 'especially' and slight punctuation/conjunction awkwardness).
