IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There is an ongoing debate regarding whether doctors or engineers A group of individuals believe that they should be required to work in the country where they did their training or study. However, others claim that they can work freely wherever they want. Therefore, ahead of perspective, both viewpoints will be discussed in the ensuing paragraphs.

Examining the former opinion, the primary arguments the supporters would put forward are that trained professionals should work in their own country where they got their education. Governments often spend a large amount of money on universities, schools, and other educational facilities. Therefore, doctors and engineers may have responsibilities to give something back to repay their worth. For example, if a government pays for a doctor's medical career, then it is the person's responsibility to do so for their local hospital for several years after graduating from that area.

On the contrary, those in favour of the latter opinion have their own arguments. To begin with, they claim that professionals should be free to work anywhere they want. People may move abroad for better salaries and personal growth. Working in another country can also help individuals to get better knowledge and new experience. For instance, an engineer can get a higher salary and learn new technology in the USA rather than staying in a country like India or Pakistan. That can be better for people's careers and society.

Taking everything into consideration and offering my position, there are convincing arguments both for and against doctors' and engineers' work. However, I support the latter opinion because everyone has the right to choose their career for a better lifestyle and personal development. The government should provide better career opportunities for their growth rather than forcing them to stay.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views on whether professionals should work in their training country or abroad, and clearly states the writer's own opinion in the final paragraphs. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of governments funding higher education and professionals moving to countries like the USA for better salaries. However, the introduction contains a slightly fragmented opening sentence ('There is an ongoing debate regarding whether doctors or engineers A group of individuals...'), which slightly detracts from the overall development, placing the response solidly at Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two opposing viewpoints, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transition phrases such as 'Examining the former opinion', 'On the contrary', and 'Taking everything into consideration' guiding the reader through the argument. Nevertheless, some referencing and transitional links feel slightly mechanical, and the flow could be smoother in places, which is characteristic of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'responsibilities', 'personal growth', and 'career opportunities'. However, there are occasional inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'repay their worth' instead of 'repay their debt' or 'contribute back', and 'do so for their local hospital'. The range is sufficient for some flexibility and precision, but errors in phrasing prevent it from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'if a government pays for a doctor's medical career, then it is the person's responsibility'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, most notably the incomplete opening sentence ('whether doctors or engineers A group of individuals...'), alongside minor issues with article usage and prepositions. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, supporting a Band 6 score.
