Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Opinions are divided on whether professional doctors and engineers should be bound to practice in the same country where they trained, or if they should be given the free will to work in any nation of their choosing. This essay will examine both perspectives before concluding that doctors and enginners should be free to make their own decision whether they want to work in the country they trained or move abroad for work.
On the one hand, some individuals argue that professional doctors and engineers must serve the nation where they completed their training. The rationale behind this is that these professioanls studied and trained in the framework of one country and each nation has made its own framework and different policies regarding these two professions. To put this in perspective, professional doctors trained in Pakistan first have to clear USMLE (U.S Medical Licensing Examination) in order to prove that they can work in the healthcare settings of the United States and only then, they get a license to practice in the U.S. This is the reason why certain people hold this belief.
On the other hand, I side with those who believe that doctor and engineer professionals can choose employment in any country of their liking. This perspective is stronger because this gives them the free will instead of making it a requirment to work in only the country in which they trained. A professional engineer can work out design plans better in a different new country utilizing his old nation training. A clear illustration of this would include the design of the tallest building in the world Burj Al Khalifa, which included professional engineers from more than 20 countries. Ultimately, this opens the door to new technological advancements as well.
In conclusion, while there are some merits that professional doctors and engineers trained in one country can serve their country better in few ways, I am of the opinion that they should be deciding body to choose what is better for their future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professionals should work in their training country versus having the freedom to move abroad—and clearly presents the writer's own opinion. The position is stated in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of the USMLE licensing process and the construction of the Burj Khalifa involving international engineers. Although the first body paragraph digresses slightly into explaining licensing exams rather than strictly debating the obligation to stay, the core task requirements are fulfilled well, aligning closely with a Band 7 performance where all parts are addressed with a clear position and supported ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. It follows a traditional four-paragraph structure with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs examining opposing views, and a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used effectively to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and referencing is generally clear. While some transitions are a bit formulaic, the logical flow from the introduction of the debate to the final verdict is well-managed, meeting the criteria for a solid Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, using terms such as 'professional doctors', 'framework', 'technological advancements', and 'free will'. There are some spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'enginners' and 'professioanls', alongside minor phrasing awkwardness like 'making it a requirment' and 'different new country'. However, the vocabulary is adequate for the task, and the writer successfully attempts less common lexical items. The errors do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a good attempt at varied structures like conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Opinions are divided on whether...', 'To put this in perspective, professional doctors trained in Pakistan first have to clear...'). There are some grammatical errors and spelling slips, including 'doctor and engineer professionals can choose' and 'they should be deciding body'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and the errors are infrequent enough that they rarely impede communication. This balance of complex structures with minor inaccuracies corresponds well to a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 performance.
