Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that professionals should work where trained and that they should be free to work anywhere—and provides a clear personal opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the ideas lack full development and depth. For instance, the discussion on the economic impact of engineers constructing buildings is somewhat simplistic and repetitive. Similarly, the example of a medical student wishing to be closer to family in America supports the counter-argument well, but remains basic. While all parts are addressed, the arguments could be extended further with more robust real-world examples and nuanced explanations to reach a higher band. Overall, the response meets the core requirements of the task adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, dividing the response into an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is frequently faulty and mechanical. The student relies on basic transition markers like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To sum up', but punctuation around these markers is erratic and distracting (e.g., spacing errors before commas). Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as pronoun ambiguity in phrases like 'they should be able to help their own country citizens'. Paragraph progression is present, but the internal logical flow within paragraphs is occasionally disrupted by choppy sentence structures and abrupt shifts in ideas. Organisation is adequate for a mid-band score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic ideas about professionals, doctors, and engineers. However, there is a limited range of vocabulary, and noticeable spelling and word choice errors appear frequently throughout the text. Examples include 'beleive' instead of 'believe', 'proffessionals' instead of 'professionals', 'feild' instead of 'field', and 'convineint' instead of 'convenient'. The student attempts less common lexical items such as 'ailment' and 'free will', but these attempts are occasionally marred by inappropriate collocation or spelling mistakes. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score to the lower-middle range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional clauses ('if a person is ill with a deadly disease') and subordinate clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in verb forms, article usage, and punctuation. Examples include subject-verb agreement errors like 'Professionals workers plays' and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation errors are particularly prominent, including excessive spacing around commas and periods. While the reader can generally decipher the intended meaning, the high frequency of grammatical and mechanical slips means that error-free sentences are not the majority, placing this performance firmly in the band 5 range.
