Student answer (Band 6.5)

Most of the people nowadays think that professionals who work as a doctor and engineer should work in the nation from where they did their training. However, in contrast, others argue that they should be free to work in any country they want to. In this essay, I will discuss the both views, how professionals can easily adapt to the work environment by working in a particular nation, and how they can extend their knowledge and income by working freely in any other country.

One major benefit of working in the country from where professionals did their training is that they can easily be exposed and find it easy to work in the environment. During their training, they learn about the organizational culture and the required skill needed to use the tools and technologies which will help them in their later work. Additionally, they find it easy to expose to the rules and regulations of the particular country. As a result, they find it easy to work and develop their skills in a short period of time. For example, Bangladesh has recently made a rule that every student should work for a minimum two years after completing their study.

On the other hand, letting experts, such as doctors and engineers be free to work in their desired country can help them increase their skills as well as income. In other words, they can expand their skills and knowledge by working in a developed country where advanced tools and technologies are used. Furthermore, they can also increase their income level. As a result, such experts can maintain their standard of living along with a wide range of knowledge. For instance, the average monthly payment for doctors in Australia is thrice the payment of Nepal.

To conclude, although such experts can easily adapt to the work environment by working in a country where they did training, they can really earn a high level of income and expand their knowledge as well by working in their desired country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professionals should work where they trained and that they should be free to work elsewhere—while also providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the rule in Bangladesh and the salary comparison between Nepal and Australia. However, some arguments, particularly regarding how professionals adapt during training, could have been extended further to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled with a well-developed, clear position throughout, aligning comfortably with the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: an introduction presenting the topic and thesis, a body paragraph discussing the first view, a second body paragraph discussing the opposing view, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One major benefit', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, although referencing is occasionally repetitive ('they find it easy...'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, demonstrating a coherent overall structure that meets the Band 7 requirements.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts some less common lexical items such as 'organizational culture', 'standard of living', and 'thrice the payment'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'exposed and find it easy to work' and 'increase their income level', as well as minor awkward phrasing like 'doctors and engineer'. The vocabulary is sufficient for precision on familiar topics, but minor errors prevent it from reaching the higher flexibility of Band 7, placing it firmly at Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully employing subordinate clauses and relative clauses (e.g., 'professionals who work as a doctor and engineer should work in the nation from where they did their training'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward constructions, such as 'Most of the people nowadays think', the missing plural in 'as a doctor and engineer', and slight prepositional slips like 'exposed to the rules'. Nevertheless, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of sentences are constructed with good control, supporting a Band 6.5 score.
