Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is argued that professionals like doctor and engineers should work in their country where they received their training. However, other think they should be free to work in another country. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.

On the one hand, there are some good reasons why professionals should work where they trained. Government often spent a lot of money on education and training for doctors and engineers. If these professional leaves the country after completed their studies, the country may face the shortage of skilled worker. For example, in many developing countries, there are not enough doctors in rural area because they moved to richer countries.

On the other hand, professionals should have freedom to choose where they want to work. Working on the another country can provide better salaries, improved working conditions and more opportunities for career development. In addition, professionals can learn new skill and get international experience. For instance, a doctor who worked in a foreign hospital may learn about medical technologies and later use in their home country.

In my opinion, professionals should be free to work in other countries because everyone should have to right to choose their career and place of work. However, government should provides better salaries and working conditions to encourage them to stay.

In conclusion, although countries need their trained professionals, it is unfair to force them to work in one country. Better opportunities and working conditions can be a more effective way to keep skilled workers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that professionals should stay and that they should be free to move—and clearly stating the writer's own opinion in the conclusion and body. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as mentioning developing countries and rural doctor shortages, as well as the benefits of acquiring international experience and advanced technologies. While some points could be expanded further for maximum depth, the position is clear throughout and the main arguments are fully relevant. The requirements of the task are well met, earning a solid Band 6.5 to 7.0 for this criterion, best reflected by Band 7.0 as all parts are addressed with a clear position and supported ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a clear overall organization with a logical progression of ideas from introduction to body paragraphs, personal opinion, and conclusion. Standard cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are utilized to structure the response effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main idea and perspective segregated into its own logical block. However, referencing and transitional flow are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive, preventing a higher score. For instance, linking phrases are somewhat formulaic. Overall, the organizational structure is coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 descriptors, comfortably sitting at Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student exhibits an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'professionals', 'developing countries', 'career development', and 'international experience'. However, there are noticeable lexical and morphological inaccuracies throughout the text, including singular/plural inconsistencies like 'doctor and engineers' instead of 'doctors and engineers', and prepositional errors such as 'Working on the another country' instead of 'in another country'. Attempts at less common vocabulary are present, but these slip-ups in word choice and collocation prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. The vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, which places this performance firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at conditional structures and relative clauses, such as 'If these professional leaves the country...' and 'a doctor who worked in a foreign hospital may learn...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('these professional leaves', 'government should provides') and missing articles or prepositions ('in country', 'use in their home country'). While these errors do not severely impede overall communication and the reader can easily follow the arguments, the frequency of basic grammatical slips prevents a higher rating. The control of grammar corresponds to a Band 6.0.
