IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are different kinds of beliefs regarding medical and engineering proffesional workers, one is to reside in the country, where they complete their education and the other is, they should have their liberty to choose whatever suits them. In my perspective, the second point of view of choosing their own path resonates with me more.

On one hand, it is believed that doctors and engineers are a national treasure. The government spends resources on these professionals, that's why they are expected to serve their own people and work for the betterment of their own country. For instance, in a survey in England it is found out that most of their progress is because of the immigrants from India and Pakistan holding extraordinary capabilities. Engineers and Doctors fly from these asian countries to the west and play a crucial role in the progress and prosperity of other nations.

On the other hand, free will should be encouraged. Doctors and engineers strive hard through out their careers, they should choose the option with better opportunities. As an example, in Pakistan most of the doctors and engineers are unemployed because of the shortage of emloyement and bizarre recruitment policies. Hence, most of the doctors and engineers leave the country, about 78000 engineers and doctors left just in 2026.

In my views, if the geographical location of some doctors and engineers doesn't work in their favors, it is better to leave the country and look out for your ow]n future. However, both of the views have their own value, if doctors and engineers would have better opportunities in their own country, why would they leave their own land in the first place.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professionals should work in their home countries and that they should have freedom of movement—while also clearly stating your own perspective in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are supported with examples, such as the mention of immigration trends and unemployment figures in Pakistan. However, some arguments lack deep development, tending towards broad assertions rather than fully extended analysis. For instance, the reference to 78,000 engineers and doctors leaving in 2026 is an interesting detail, but the overall support remains slightly limited. According to the Band 6 and 7 descriptors, the task is addressed well with a clear position throughout, but ideas could be more extensively developed to reach the highest bands. Overall, this sits comfortably at a Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. The text is divided into four paragraphs, appropriately separating the introduction, the two body viewpoints, and the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions between paragraphs, with phrases like 'On one hand,' and 'On the other hand,' effectively guiding the reader through the opposing arguments. However, referencing is occasionally slightly loose, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. For example, the final paragraph begins with 'In my views,' which is slightly awkward and breaks the logical flow into the counter-argument. Paragraphing and general layout are managed sufficiently to ensure the progression of ideas is coherent. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'proffesional workers,' 'liberty,' 'national treasure,' and 'bizarre recruitment policies.' However, there are notable spelling errors ('proffesional', 'emloyement', 'favors') and slight lexical inaccuracies, such as 'look out for your own future' shifting pronoun perspective abruptly to the second person ('your'). These vocabulary and spelling slips do not impede communication, but they prevent the essay from achieving a higher score. Because the range is adequate and attempts less common vocabulary despite some inaccuracies, this fits the Band 6 descriptor well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar and sentence structure. Examples such as 'the second point of view of choosing their own path resonates with me more' and 'if doctors and engineers would have better opportunities in their own country, why would they leave' show an attempt at complex clauses. However, there are frequent errors in punctuation, comma splices, and tense usage, such as 'resources on these professionals, that's why they are expected' and 'in a survey in England it is found out'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication. This balance of mixed structures and occasional grammatical inaccuracies corresponds to a Band 6 score.
