Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the past few years , there has been a discussion of whether professionals , like doctors and engineers , should be required to work in the country where they did their training. I will be talking from my view point and giving a fair assessment of both sides

Although some people want to have professionals work in the same country where they did their training , it can be more flawed than having positives . In a country like India , where there are hundreds of thousands of people that train and qualify to become doctors and engineers, most of them wish to find jobs elsewhere . Some reasons could be : the very low amount of pay in the country - as opposed to developed countries like that of Qatar , where doctors and engineers make anywhere from $10000 and upwards per month , in India , they make merely $1500 per month . Another reason could be due to lack of employment opportunities in the country . If a foreign country has job vacancy , and a person wishes to go there , but is held back as they have to work in the same country as they did their training , but that country has no job vacancy , this could cause distress and sadness in the professional .

Although a lot can be said against the motion , it is certainly a duty of the professional to serve at least a few years to the country they finished their training to show some level of gratitude. It can also be helpful in the career of the professional, as they are already experienced with the people , the language , the culture etc from their training . Speaking from experience, my cousin brother , who finished his doctor training in Germany , worked in Germany due to the laws . He was also completely invested into the idea of working in Germany , as he had to learn German before even starting his almost decade of training . During the long period of training , he developed a deep sense of respect and love and emotional connection to the country like never before . He also got to see and know all the different types of people in the country

Although both sides have their own views , I , believe that a person should decide himself on where he wants to work and study . The decision of each individual is to be respected , and the belief of wanting the professionals to work where they finished their training is one that should completely be eradicated .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professionals should work where trained and that they should be free to move—while also providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the comparison of salaries in India versus Qatar and the personal anecdote about the writer's cousin in Germany. While some arguments are slightly repetitive or anecdotal, the task is fully covered, demonstrating a clear position throughout. This aligns well with the requirements for Band 7, as all parts of the prompt are addressed and supported with clear ideas, though the generalisation regarding salaries and career motivations could be elaborated further for a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall progression with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct ideas. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition 'Although a lot can be said against the motion' is somewhat awkward given the flow of the arguments, and the use of referencing is occasionally repetitive. Cohesive devices are present, but their usage lacks the flexibility and seamless integration characteristic of higher bands. Therefore, a score of 6.0 is appropriate, reflecting a coherent overall arrangement with some mechanical cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'employment opportunities', 'distress and sadness', and 'deep sense of respect'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'cousin brother' (an Indian English phrasing which sounds unnatural in international English) and 'doctor training' instead of 'medical training'. Spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher score. The lexical range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but lacks the precision and natural control required for Band 7.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and subordinate clauses introduced by 'although' and 'where'. There are, however, frequent punctuation and grammatical errors, particularly with spacing around commas (e.g., 'professionals , like doctors') and occasional clunky phrasing like 'decide himself on where he wants to work'. While these errors do not impede overall communication and the reader can easily follow the arguments, the frequency of minor structural and punctuation slips prevents the response from reaching Band 7, where a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences is expected.
