Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—that professionals should work where trained and that they should be free to move—and provides a personal opinion in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is limited and under-developed. For instance, the arguments regarding government investment and brain drain in developing countries are raised but lack sufficient extension or detailed examples. Furthermore, the final paragraph contradicts the earlier balanced presentation by abruptly stating a definitive opinion without full integration into the body. While the prompt is partially addressed, the ideas remain somewhat restricted and lack the fully extended support characteristic of a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic organization to the essay, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and paragraphs are generally used to signal shifts in topic. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the logical flow is frequently disrupted by mechanical and inadequate cohesive devices. Phrases like 'As,'beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder' Likewise,' are inappropriately used and impede smooth transitions. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as orphaned conjunctions and disjointed sentences like 'Moreover, . People have the right to choose their careers.' Paragraphing is attempted, but the structural integration between sentences and paragraphs is repetitive and lacks cohesive harmony.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic ideas about professional migration. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as 'spanding' instead of spending, 'expect' instead of aspect, 'esalating' instead of escalating, and 'predominat' instead of predominant. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but issues with spelling, word form, and collocation occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. For instance, phrases like 'regime investment should be protected' demonstrate inaccurate lexical selection that prevents the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions alongside faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, including issues with subject-verb agreement and missing articles or prepositions, such as 'everyone have right' instead of 'everyone has the right'. Punctuation and structural integration are also flawed, seen in incomplete clauses and dangling modifiers like 'which ought to be restricted their personal and professional growth.' The control of grammatical patterns is inconsistent, meaning that complex clauses frequently contain errors rather than being produced with high accuracy.
