Student answer (Band 6.0)
Certain people think that professionals like doctors and engineers should serve the country where they got their training. Others argue that they should have the autonomy to choose where they want to work. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that doctors and engineers should have complete freedom to pursure their career in any country they want.
On the one hand, we have the statement that doctors and engineers should wok in the country they received their training. I believe this stems from the fact that people want a patriotic philosphy attached to everything they do. They believe that serving their country should be the purpose of everyone's life. People also hold opinions that working in your own culture as a professional may help local community, since they are better equiped to deal with the issues.
On the other hand, I believe that doctors and engineers should have complete independence to choose any country they wish to work in. Most professional doctors and engineers pay out of pocket to earn their degrees. Furthermore, it also includes cost of many paid courses and internships, that they require to fulfill their credit hours. So, in my opinion they are not obliged to serve their country after they graduate. If any professional has an opportunity to excel better in their abroad, they should be able to take it.
In conclusion, although it is a nice idea to serve your country after your training, it can have negative impact on students pursuing MBBS and engineering degrees.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that professionals should stay in their training country and that they should have freedom of movement—and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the second view regarding personal investment and financial independence is relatively well-elaborated, the first view discussing patriotism and community benefit is rather limited and under-developed, lacking specific examples or deeper analysis. To reach a higher band, all parts of the prompt need to be extended with equal depth, exploring the implications of retaining medical and engineering talent in their home countries in greater detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance outlined in the introduction and maintained throughout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the two body paragraphs discussing opposing views, and a brief conclusion. However, the progression from one idea to the next can occasionally feel mechanical, and referencing is not always completely clear. For instance, the transition between sentences relies on basic signposting rather than smooth logical bridges. To move further up the scale, the student needs to use cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that information flows seamlessly across sentences and paragraphs without relying on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common terms such as 'autonomy', 'independence', and 'philosphy' (though this contains a minor spelling error). There are some noticeable limitations and occasional word choice inaccuracies, such as 'excel better in their abroad' instead of 'abroad' used as a noun adjunct or prepositional phrase. Spelling errors like 'philosphy', 'equiped', and 'pursure' appear, but they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher level, the writer should incorporate a wider variety of precise academic collocations and eliminate slips in spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response contains a workable mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination such as 'Although it is a nice idea to serve your country...' and 'If any professional has an opportunity...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('working in your own culture... may help local community' missing an article) and awkward prepositional usage ('in their abroad'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach a higher band, the writer must produce a greater frequency of error-free complex structures and demonstrate tighter control over articles and prepositions within grammatical patterns.
