IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Any profession that has literal practical implications, in my opinion, should be practiced anywhere in the world. For instance, Doctors, who are literally trained to save people's lives, should not be restricted to their home country just because they took the course there. It is unfair to their professional capabilities as well as to people who can actually use the medical help. There are several specialised fields witin the medicine in which very few skilled professionals are trained in certain countries. For example, recently i had to give birth in Ethiopia and there were hardly any female gynaecologists, same was the case with female heart specialists. There were only 2 female heart specialist in Addis Ababa alone, which is a big internationalcitiy with lots of foreigners living there. This makes one wonders, what if they allowed other female gynae doctors to practice, patients would have more choices at their hands for their treatment and pregnancy journey.

As for engineers or other such on field professionals, it is rather essential for their professional capabilities to experience different corporate and culture exposure. It will only enhance their knowledge about their work. So instead keeping them confined in same region they should be given the opportunity to expand their horizons professionally.

Besides, working in a country where manpower is lacking or the brain-drain is happening, will not only help that country but also help professionals feel a sense of accomplishment than just making money. If restrictions were made like that, then Doctors without borders would have never came into experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear view in favour of allowing professionals to work abroad, and your examples about shortages of female specialists in Ethiopia make the benefits of mobility concrete. You also mention engineers’ professional development and the possible value of working where staff are needed. However, the opposing view—that trained professionals should serve the country that funded or provided their training—is not explained, so the discussion does not fully address both sides. Some supporting points also need clearer development: the reference to “Doctors without borders” is relevant, but you do not explain how it supports your argument. To strengthen the response, present the case for requiring local service, then compare it directly with your position and develop each point with a clear reason or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a generally understandable sequence: you begin with your position, give a medical example, move to engineers, and conclude with a broader point about countries needing professionals. Paragraphing helps distinguish the main areas of discussion. However, the progression is not fully balanced because the opposing view is absent, and several ideas run together within long paragraphs. Connections such as “As for” and “Besides” are useful, but the relationship between the Ethiopia example and the claim about professional freedom could be made more explicit. The final reference to Doctors Without Borders also arrives abruptly. Use a separate paragraph for each side, add clearer links between claims and evidence, and finish with a concise conclusion that restates your position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “professional capabilities,” “specialised fields,” “brain-drain,” and “expand their horizons.” These choices help communicate ideas about employment and expertise, and the personal example is expressed clearly overall. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward word choices and spelling slips, such as “wit[in] the medicine,” “internationalcitiy,” and “on field professionals.” Phrases such as “at their hands” and “corporate and culture exposure” are also not natural collocations, which reduces precision. Aim for more conventional academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, describe “limited access to specialists” rather than saying patients have “more choices at their hands.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause “Doctors, who are literally trained to save people’s lives” and the conditional construction “If restrictions were made…”. Meaning is generally clear, and grammatical errors rarely prevent understanding. Some errors remain in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction. For example, “There were only 2 female heart specialist” needs a plural noun, while “This makes one wonders” has an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “So instead keeping them confined…” also needs a clearer grammatical structure, such as “Instead of keeping them confined…”. Review agreement and verb patterns, and use punctuation to break up long sentences.
