IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely argued that professionals, namely doctors and engineers, should work where they have to work. A significant number of individuals believe that they should work where they gain their training, while another group think that they should choose for themselves where they want to work. These essays' views have different reasons of their own. However, I agree with the latter statement because it totally depends on the individuals.

There are many crucial reasons behind working in the country where they studied. One primary reason is that if professionals, like doctors and engineers, work in the country where they received their training, the nation will develop. This is due to doctors helping the country improve its healthcare; meanwhile, engineers build a stronger country and its infrastructure. As a result, the condition of the nation will recover, and the country will keep growing. Hence, any country needs to have their professionals in it.

On the other hand, one primary reason to give professional individuals the right to choose their working country is that flexibility and freedom lead to productivity. As professional workers can choose their working country, this allows them to work where they want or have dreamed of. It gives them the freedom; not only that, but they get the flexibility to work. This is because they can work in their natural way, without any pressure, which also generates productivity. Therefore, doctors and engineers, like other occupation workers, may live their future lives as they want to live.

In conclusion, although working in a developing country leads to a nation's growth, choosing their own working country gives them flexibility, freedom and their dream life. Therefore, I believe that workers should choose their own working country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both positions and state your view clearly: the introduction and conclusion support professionals’ freedom to choose where they work. The reasons are relevant, including the contribution of doctors and engineers to national development and the link you make between choice, freedom, and productivity. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view is explained in broad terms, and the second relies mainly on the claim that freedom increases productivity; neither is supported with a specific example or a fuller explanation of possible consequences. The phrase “where they have to work” also blurs the distinction between the two positions. Develop each side with a concrete example and explain the trade-offs before reinforcing your opinion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression from national benefit to individual choice is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some of the stronger control associated with more flexible cohesion. However, linking is occasionally mechanical: “One primary reason” is repeated, and “Therefore” and “Hence” sometimes announce conclusions without showing the reasoning between ideas. The reference in “These essays’ views” is also unclear. Use more precise referencing and connect claims through explanation rather than relying mainly on transition phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “professionals,” “infrastructure,” “flexibility,” and “productivity,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “a significant number of individuals.” However, some word choices and collocations are noticeably unnatural or imprecise, which limits the precision of the argument. For example, “where they have to work” does not accurately express the training-country position, “the condition of the nation will recover” is vague, and “occupation workers” is not idiomatic. “These essays’ views” is also an awkward expression. Aim for natural collocations and choose words that state the intended relationship precisely; this will make the argument sound more fluent and convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses: “if professionals … work in the country where they received their training” and “This is because they can work … without any pressure.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction. In “another group think,” the singular subject “group” calls for “thinks”; “any country needs to have their professionals” has unclear agreement between “country” and “their”; and “It gives them the freedom; not only that, but they get the flexibility” joins ideas awkwardly with a semicolon. Review subject–verb agreement and punctuation, and practise combining related ideas into well-controlled complex sentences.
