Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that skilled workers, such as doctors or engineers, have to work in the country where they graduated, while others think that one can work wherever they want. In my opinion, governments cannot force professionals to work within its country.

On the one hand, many people think that if you graduate from the university that is funded by the public money it is your obligation to work in the country you have graduated from, so you can repay those money. For instance, education of medical doctors is very expensive but at the same time, it is not obligatory for the graduates to work as doctors within the country. Due to that fact a lot of doctors emigrate to the different countries to work there and they oublic in the public health services. That means that one government paid for the education, while other is beneficient of that education, what can be seen as unfair. For this reason, a lot of people tend to think thay it should be required to work in the country they did their education.

On the other hand, having posibility to decide where one wants to work seems to be a part of a democrasy. For instance, one country can offer better salary and work-life balance than the other. And if an individual puts a lot of effort to graduate, it seem fair to let him or her decide in which country him/her wants to live. Also, certain decisions can be driven by the private life, not only the professional career. Consequently, every and each person shall be able to decide wheather they want to stay in the country or relocate.

In conclusion, I think that every graduate should be able to make their own decision regarding the location of the job.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear opinion: the introduction and conclusion state that professionals should be free to choose where they work. The discussion of public funding is relevant, and the example of doctors emigrating helps explain why some people see a duty to repay the country. The opposing view is also supported with reasons involving salary, work-life balance and personal circumstances. However, the first view is developed more fully than the second, and the claim that graduates should repay public investment could be explained more precisely—for example, by considering a limited period of service or other ways to repay it. Further development of both sides would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from the public-investment argument to individual choice is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help orient the reader. Some linking is mechanical, however, particularly the repeated use of “For instance” and “For this reason.” A few references are also unclear: “those money” and “other” in the first body paragraph make the relationships between the governments and the funding harder to follow. Use more precise referencing and vary transitions so that connections between ideas feel smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “public money,” “emigrate,” “work-life balance,” and “relocate.” These choices allow the main arguments to be understood, and some topic-specific language is attempted. However, several word-choice, collocation, word-form and spelling errors reduce precision: “beneficient” is not the intended form, “democrasy” is misspelled, and “they oublic in the public health services” appears to contain a typing or word-choice error that obscures the meaning. Phrases such as “every and each person” are also unnatural. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and proofread spelling; this would make the vocabulary more flexible and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate clauses: “if you graduate from the university…” and “if an individual puts a lot of effort to graduate…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, articles, pronouns and sentence construction. For example, “governments cannot force professionals to work within its country” has a plural–singular mismatch, while “it seem fair” needs subject–verb agreement. The construction “in which country him/her wants to live” is also faulty, and “the university that is funded by the public money” uses an unnecessary article. Review agreement and pronoun forms, and check each sentence for a complete, correctly linked structure.
