IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There is an ongoing debate between people who think that professionals, like doctors and engineers, should work in the country where they got their education or training from and those who think that they are free to work wherever they want. There are countries that produce many professionals but fail to keep them. This can heavily impact the country's overall economy due to less real professionals working. While if we look at the other side of the picture, there are countries who fail to provide good salaries for their professionals. This can cause them to seek better opportunity in other parts of the world.

It is true that, professionals should work where they got their education from because it is the least thing they can offer back to their respective country. A country's whole economy relies on its professionals. If they manage to lose them, it can impact the country's overall economy. Recent study shows that, 38% of a country's professionals leave their hometown for better opportunities and benefits.

However, I belive that, they should be free to work wherever they want. If a professional is getting a higher salary in other country, then it is their choice to work for them. A country's job is to provide better opportunities and market competitive benefits for their skilled professionals.

In conclusion, both of the views are correct in their own terms. The professionals should work where they received their training to help and support their relevant sectors but, in my opinion, a professional is entitled to work wherever they find a better opportunity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position clearly: you acknowledge that professionals can support the country that trained them, but conclude that they should be free to seek better opportunities abroad. The reasons are relevant, particularly the possible economic impact of losing skilled workers and the role of salaries in influencing migration. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The argument for requiring professionals to stay is mainly asserted through the claim that it is “the least thing they can offer back,” while the statistic about professionals leaving is not explained or connected to a specific example. Develop each view with clearer consequences or a concrete illustration, and explain more fully why personal choice outweighs the country’s investment in training.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: the introduction presents the debate, separate paragraphs discuss each view, and the conclusion restates your position. Transitions such as “However” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the shift in argument, and the progression is generally logical. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. To make the progression more consistently smooth, connect claims within paragraphs more explicitly: for example, explain how the statistic about professionals leaving supports the economic argument. Some linking is mechanical, and the conclusion repeats the two positions rather than drawing together the reasoning. Check punctuation around connectors such as “but” so that the relationships between clauses are clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “professionals,” “overall economy,” “better opportunities,” and “market competitive benefits,” so the main ideas are communicated clearly. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “seek better opportunity” and “relevant sectors.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “better opportunity” would usually be plural here, and “market competitive benefits” is not a natural combination. “Hometown” is also less precise than “country” in this context. Spelling errors such as “belive” are noticeable. Aim to use familiar vocabulary accurately and check spelling and collocations before trying more ambitious expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If they manage to lose them, it can impact…” and “If a professional is getting a higher salary…”. Most sentences remain understandable, and the errors do not prevent the reader from following your position. Some grammatical and punctuation problems persist, however. The comma after “It is true that” is unnecessary, and “Recent study shows that, 38%…” needs an article and should not place a comma after “that.” The opening “While if we look…” is an incomplete construction, and “a professional is getting a higher salary in other country” needs an article before “other country.” Review clause boundaries, articles, and comma use to improve accuracy.
