IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that professionals, such as doctors and engineers, should be required to work in the country where they did their training. Others believe they should be free to work in another country if they wish.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A large number of people hold a belief that specialists like doctors and engineers, should not leave their country where they did their training while others think that they should have the choice of working wherever they want. I think that such people should work in their own countries to benefit their own land however many problems, such as unemployment in their country, low pay and other circumstances justify their migration to foriegn nations.

When such graduates complete their trainning, they should work in their own land and serve their nation according to their capacity. For instance, a heart surgeon who work in a local government hospital may save the lives of many people who cannot afford a private hospital as it 's fee is very high. When such doctors move to other countries, it creats a vacancy which might leave the poor-class people helpless. Similarly, a chemist could work in his country to find the cure of some local diseases or make it much cheaper.

However, this is true in cases where the government of their country provides them the resources and pays they derserve. Unfortunately, in many developing countries, it is not true. For example in pakistan, there is no wide range of scope for mechanical engineers other than typical work in industries. Their pays, as compared to the foriegn countries like germany are very low. Thus, many skilled graduates move over seas in order to get a much better working enviroment and good payments. Likewise, if a chemist working on a disease do not get suffecient resources like labortory and chemicals, etc from their government, they fly to countries like the USA, which provides them each and everything to shift their focus on getting good results.

In conclusion, I would say that the authorities must make such enviroment where professionals can work without concerning themselves with such problems. Only then, we can claim that these experts should work in their own countries.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address both views and give a clear position: you favour professionals serving their home countries, while recognising that poor pay and limited resources can justify working abroad. The examples of a surgeon treating people who cannot afford private care and engineers facing limited opportunities in Pakistan support the discussion. Your conclusion also follows your argument by calling on authorities to improve working conditions. This fits the task well, though some claims are broad—for example, that professionals should serve their nation—and the point about chemists researching local diseases could be explained more fully. To strengthen the response further, develop the consequences of migration and the benefits of professional freedom with more specific reasoning, while keeping your position consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph supporting work at home, a contrasting paragraph explaining why professionals leave, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “However,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the shift between views. The progression is generally logical, but some links are mechanical, and the second body paragraph contains several examples joined in a similar way. References such as “such people” and “such doctors” are understandable, though repeated phrasing makes the flow less smooth. For a stronger, more flexible progression, group related reasons together, vary how you connect examples, and make the relationship between each example and the main claim explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “skilled graduates,” “resources,” “mechanical engineers,” and “working environment,” and the reader can understand your main points. However, the range and control are limited by repeated general terms such as “work,” “country,” and “good,” as well as inaccurate word choices and collocations. For example, “their pays” and “good payments” are less natural than “their salaries” or “better pay,” while “fly to countries” does not precisely express professional migration. Spelling errors such as “foriegn,” “trainning,” and “enviroment” are also noticeable. Build a more precise set of topic-related expressions and check spelling and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including conditional reasoning (“where the government… provides them the resources”) and clauses introduced by “when,” “who,” and “if.” This allows you to express causes and examples, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make sentences harder to process. For instance, “a heart surgeon who work” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “if a chemist… do not get” also needs agreement. The sentence beginning “Only then” has an unclear construction (“we can claim that these experts should work”), and punctuation around the opening clause and examples needs more control. Practise checking agreement and sentence boundaries, and simplify long sentences when several ideas are being combined.
